The Hoja Copan
Cigar Second only to the Dominican Republic in its exports to the United States in the 1990’s, Honduras, shipped more than 40 million cigars to the U.S. from factories dispersed around the country, from the hot, coastal plains around San Pedro Sula to the cooler mountains and hills of Santa Rosa de Copan and Danli. As in the Dominican Republic, the status of the Honduran cigar industry received a tremendous boost upon the arrival of anit-Castro Cuban refugees in the 1960’s. The Hoja Copan Cigar Co. is a relatively new tobacco manufacturer located in Santa Rosa de Copan and is currently distributed only in that country and lightly through select retail locations primarily on the east coast. In addition to the three cigars featured this month Hoja Copan also produces a Robusto Corona and a Petite Corona.
Length: 5 1/2Ring Gauge: 42
Filler: Honduras
Binder: Honduras
Wrapper: Honduran Connecticut Shade
Notes from the Panel:
As typical for Honduran blends, we found the Hoja de Copan cigars reviewed to be medium to full-bodied and strong in flavor. All cigars were constructed well with smooth, unblemished wrappers. The corona smoked evenly and was a nice length to enjoy any time of day. We found the smoke to be rich and flavorful.
Length: 6 1/4
Ring Gauge: 42
Filler: Honduras
Binder: Honduras
Wrapper: U.S.A. Connecticut Broadleaf
Notes from the Panel:
A tighter wrap than the Churchill, this cigar drew slightly harder and its length allowed it to work more towards being full-bodied than its shorter cousin. We noted a subdued spiciness and earthy flavors with a complementary light aroma. Overall, a very enjoyable, well-balanced smoke.
Length: 7
Ring Gauge: 50
Filler: Honduras
Binder: Honduras
Wrapper: U.S.A. Connecticut Broadleaf
Notes from the Panel:
The wrappers on 2 of the 5 Churchills had a slight discoloration towards the very end of the cigar that could have been a result of storing them in too moist an environment. The Churchills also tended to be slightly looser wraps than either Corona. Overall, we found this to be a truly enjoyable, easy-drawing, flavorful smoke that peaked halfway through the smoke after the cigar heated up. Not for the timid.
The Jose Girbes>
Cigar A useful guide to judging the strength and flavor of a cigar is by knowing the county of origin. Honduran brands tend to be more on the full-bodied and spicier side while those produced in the Dominican Republic are generally mild to medium-bodied. You should be able to note the difference when comparing the two Domincan Jose Girbes cigars to their Honduran counterparts featured this month. In addition to the Corona and Robusto featured, Jose Girbes also produces a Lonsdale and a Churchill.
Length: 5 1/2
Ring Gauge: 42
Filler: Dominican Republic
Binder: Dominican Republic
Wrapper: U.S.A. Connecticut Broadleaf
Notes from the Panel:
Jose Girbes’ corona is a well constructed cigar, wrapped slightly tighter than any of the Hoja Copan cigars and offering a mildly aromatic and somewhat oily, wrapper. We found the body of the cigar to be very smooth with some wood and coffee beans evident on the pallet. The tighter wrap makes for a nice even burn. The finish, similar to the entire experience, was very pleasant and light-bodied.
Length: 5
Ring Gauge: 50
Filler: Dominican Republic
Binder: Dominican Republic
Wrapper: U.S.A. Connecticut Broadleaf
Notes from the Panel:
The Robustos reviewed were all constructed well. It started bitter and moved towards a fairly light-bodied, even-burning smoke. The flavor, although mild, seemed to be more pronounced than the corona. Overall, a very smooth, enjoyable smoke.
Appreciation and Care for your Cigars
If you’re a casual smoker and don’t own a humidor, there are many varied options to maintain the freshness of your cigars. In the short term you can put them in a zip lock plastic bag (open) and then place the bag in a Tupperware-like container. Put a dampened ball of paper towel (use distilled water) in the container as well, but do not allow the paper towel to touch the cigars. Do not put your cigars in the refrigerator; it's too cold and dry. Be certain to examine your cigars frequently, checking for mold. If you see mold beginning to grow, allow your "Tupper-dor" to dry out somewhat and reduce the amount of moisture it's receiving.
