Second only to the Dominican Republic in its exports to the United States in the 1990’s, Honduras, shipped more than 40 million cigars to the U.S. from factories dispersed around the country, from the hot, coastal plains around San Pedro Sula to the cooler mountains and hills of Santa Rosa de Copan and Danli. As in the Dominican Republic, the status of the Honduran cigar industry received a tremendous boost upon the arrival of anit-Castro Cuban refugees in the 1960’s. The Hoja Copan Cigar Co. is a relatively new tobacco manufacturer located in Santa Rosa de Copan and is currently distributed only in that country and lightly through select retail locations primarily on the east coast. In addition to the three cigars featured this month Hoja Copan also produces a Robusto Corona and a Petite Corona.
As typical for Honduran blends, we found the Hoja de Copan cigars reviewed to be medium to full-bodied and strong in flavor. All cigars were constructed well with smooth, unblemished wrappers. The corona smoked evenly and was a nice length to enjoy any time of day. We found the smoke to be rich and flavorful.
