Member of the Month

Bob Turnbull: Greetings from Saskatchewan Canada!

Hey there guys and gals of the Cigar of the Month Club. The reasons I like being a member of the Club are:

1. I get premium cigars once a month that I would never ever see if I was not a member of this Exclusive Club.

2. I find that with every cigar that I smoke, that I receive from the Club, it is like I am taking a little holiday to the country the cigar comes from.

3. I look forward to the day when my cigars come in so I can see which exotic places I will be visiting.

4. I also like the write-ups that come with each and every cigar, telling you about the construction and ingredients that go into the cigar.

In closing I would like to thank you for allowing me to join your Premium Cigar of the Month Club.

Camacho Corojo Toro

The Camacho Corojo comes from the rich soils of the Jamastran Valley of Honduras. Cuban cigar master Tino Argudin recognized that the soils of this region would be valuable for tobacco cultivation, proclaiming that "We will never find neither soil nor region as similar to Vuelta Abajo [a region in Cuba long renown for its tobacco] as the Jamastran Valley in Honduras".

Absolutely loaded with flavor, expect heaps of prominent, rich tobacco flavors, notes of aromatic cedar and a small kiss of cinnamon. You'll note a host of additional spices that contribute to this cigar's complex flavor profile, with a range of running the gamut from slightly sweet to peaty leather and robust pepperiness. This cigar accomplishes what so few truly can, delivering a multitude of flavors that burst forth in perfect balance with one another. A KO champ of this magnitude calls for the best XO cognac you can get your hands on, and of course, a chair to fall in to when it delivers its one-two (three-four-five) combination of intense flavors.

H. Upmann Naturales Tubo

German banker Herman Upmann founded H. Upmann Cigars in Havana back in 1844. Now celebrating 160 years in the business of creating premium cigars, you can imagine that they know their stuff. We found the draw effortless, providing plumes of smoke that were in sharp contrast to the nearly quiescent character displayed between draws. The blend of Olor and Cuban seed Piloto Cubano and choice Indonesian wrapper give this cigar a medium-bodied intensity. Look for pleasant tobacco flavors with a mix of sweetened spices and light pepper. Expect notes of clove and a tremendous ash that will grow to over an inch before letting go. Interestingly, the H. Upmann brand is still produced in Cuba, as well as the Dominican Republic. We suggest smoking this earlier in the day with a light Czech Pilsner.

Mayorga Maduro

Our panel really enjoyed this box-pressed beauty of a Maduro. Handmade in Nicaragua, this cigar also impressed Cigar Aficionado with a '90' rating. Rolled with a dark, smooth maduro wrapper and Nicaraguan Ligero & Seca long-filler and Piloto Cubano binder, Mayorga begins with a mild-bodied taste, and builds to a very pleasing medium-bodied flavor. Expertly constructed, it is dense and firm with no soft spots whatsoever. The sheer amount of tobacco packed in to this Robusto ensures that you'll have plenty of cool smoke to enjoy for quite a while. The draw may be a bit tight to start, but will quickly ease up as you smoke it. This cigar gets better and better and in all aspects during the smoking experience, and you ought to find yourself smoking it right down to the nub like our review panel members did. Expect raw tobacco flavors that build in complexity and intensity through the smokecomplemented by a slight sweetness on the lips at the start and picking up spicier notes toward the finish. Consider this cigar before dinner with either your favorite light rum or a single-malt scotch.

Santa Damiana

We list this cigar as coming from the Dominican Republic, and while it is produced there at Tabacalera de Garcia in La Ramadan, its blend of Nicaraguan binders and a complex long leaf blend of Dominican, Brazilian and Nicaraguan tobaccos, all draped in a soft Nicaraguan Habana 2000 wrapper, make for a truly multinational cigar. The wrapper, appearing on a very limited number of the world's cigars, has characteristics of both Connecticut shade leaves and Cuban-seed tobacco and contributes to the unique flavor of this cigar. It recently received a rating of 92' by Cigar Aficionado's Insiderone of the highest ever ratings for a non-Cuban brand. The Nicaraguan H-2000 wrapper helps add a robust punch to this particular Santa Damiana, usually regarded as a mild brand. An additional spiciness is imparted by the Brazilian tobaccos, culminating in a cigar that is full-flavored, yet mild-to-medium-bodied. Look for notes of leather and cinnamon that beautifully balance one another amidst an elaborate interplay between varied tobaccos; never competing with one another, these tobaccos instead marry together flawlessly. We break from tradition here and suggest that you try this cigar straight up with Cruzan Pineapple Rum for a surprisingly pleasant combination.

Felipe My WayCT Shade

The My Way Torpedo became the decisive treasure of the Sinatra cigar series, blended with Connecticut shade wrappers and a flavorful, mild to medium-bodied concoction of aged Dominican long leaf fillersthis was the ultimate in the Sinatra line of cigars. Just to give you an idea of the demand this cigar, you couldn't buy it for less than $300 per box! Unfortunately, legal issues arose with the Sinatra estate after his passing, and the brand was pulled from the market. Waiting for these issues to clear, these prized gems sat in Felipe's aging rooms for years. Today, Felipe has resurrected this blend in a slightly new incarnation. The Felipe My Way offers a slightly different name, more quality aging, and a far more reasonable price. Expect a spicy flavor with a fairly strong, medium-bodied flavor and a lingering, prominent peppery finish. Aged leather, spice and subtle notes of cream round out the cascade of flavors that seem to croon forth from this cigarall through a fantastic draw. A bit of Frank's favorite drink, Jack Daniel's Bourbon Whisky, goes Nice n' Easy' and All the Way' with this My Way.

ASK MURL

Hey Murl,

I really have to say I love this club manfine stogies and the monthly newsletter really make a great team. And I have learned so much from your column! Hopefully you can help me learn about this sometimes I find a fine white residue on my cigars particularly on those that have been aging for a long time. What's the scoop on that stuff? Is it harmful? Does it influence the cigar flavor? Thanks Murl! And if you're ever in Vegas, look me up As a long-time local, I know the best places to relax with a cigar out there!

Karen Hirsch
Las Vegas, NV

Yo Karen!

Finally a question from the female of the species! It's been a little while, but a cool chick like yourself (from Las Vegas no less scoring some bonus points there!) will always come up with a worthwhile query. And usually the inquiries from the ladies don't have answers that are totally obvious, often showcasing some degree of observational skills. I'm sure you already know this Karen, but guys can be, well, dumb. Human guys I mean not keen Male canines like my smooth self. I'm not kidding you here Karen I have read questions like, hey Murl, ever try lighting both ends of the cigar dude? I think that would be pretty cool. No my pyro-loving friend, that would be very HOT. Or, Murl, I've been wanting forever for my local cigar shop to get in some Cubans but they never get em. What's with that place should I look for better one? Yes, might I suggest, oh, I don't know CUBA!! Never get such off the charts questions from the ladies. Anyway, on to your question if the residue you're encountering looks like powdered sugar and wipes off easily, it's probably "bloom". Bloom is actually the crystallized oils that form on properly aging wrapper leaf, thus explaining why you tend to find it on the more aged cigars (like I said very observant). It's a natural result of the fermentation process, and is absolutely not a sign of a bad cigar. In fact, it's more likely a sign that you have ideal storage conditions for your beloved old stogies. Doesn't directly affect flavor, but most people prefer to wipe it off anyway. And it isn't harmful in the leastsimply wipe it offif it is bloom, it will come right off. If, on the other hand, what you're looking at is fuzzy or blue/green and is on the foot of the cigar in the filler tobaccos (or could also appear on the wrapper) and doesn't easily wipe offit is most likely mold. If your cigars are moldy they're pretty much a lost cause, I hate to say. Don't try smoking a moldy cigar, not that you would, but just in case there are a few fellas out there who don't have their thinking caps on don't do it guys, no matter how much your buddies offer to pay you unless you give it to the guy who's lighting both endshe's special enough to deal with it

And Karen, you can count on me getting in touch with ya next time I'm in Sin City. If you hear a knock at the door and look out your peephole and don't see no oneit might just be me out there. I may be bit height challenged, but it makes for easy pickings when scouring the casino floors for dropped winnings, and for cutting in the buffet line. Ahhhh, Vegas how I miss thee

Woof!
Murl
