The Purofino Cigars

The Purofino Gold and Blue Label cigars are manufactured entirely by hand in the mountainous heart of Spanish Honduras' lush Jamastram Valley, and represent a tradition of more than two decades of experience in the art of creating the finest, premium quality cigars possible. While being made in the hands of Honduran Master Cigar Makers, all three blends featured this month are brought together from a complex spectrum of individually selected tobaccos from select growing regions in Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Mexico, and Ecuador, where their Sumatran-seed wrappers are produced. Much of the tobacco used in both lines is grown on Purofino's plantations located in the Jalapa Valley in Nicaragua. Tobacco obtained from Costa Rica, Mexico and Ecuador are also cured and processed at the Jalapa Valley plantation.

Purofino's Gold Label line is a rich, complex five-tobacco blend of Nicaraguan Habano (Cuban Havana seed) long filler, combined with select leaves of the finest sweet Morron tobaccos, from San Andreas, Mexico, which is then wrapped in a premium, Sumatran Capa Rosada, grown in the tropical valleys of southern Ecuador. The Blue line is rolled with a sweetly mysterious blend of six assorted leaves from Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Mexico and comes in a premium, naturally cured, demi-maduro Sumatran Capa Oscuro wrapper, grown in southern Ecuador.

Purofino has recently introduced its new flagship cigar line, the DOM series which we know you're going to really like. Under development since May 1996, the DOM is a select blend of three fifth cut ligero leaves from the Jalapa Valley in Nicaragua and the San Victor valley in the Dominican Republic, and one seco leaf from each region. The cigar uses a Pennsylvania Broadleaf binder which really ads to it's strength and is wrapped in a 3 yr. aged, naturally fermented Connecticut Broadleaf Double Maduro wrapper. The DOM Petite Belicoso featured this month received ratings as high as any we've ever featured and we know you're going to really enjoy it. Blue Label Piramide

Binder: Costa Rican Morron
Filler: Mexican Morron, Nicaraguan Ligero, Costa Rican Seca
Wrapper: Sumatra-Seed Ecuadorian-CO Maduro
Strength (Mild 1, Full 10): 6.5
Panel Rating: 93

Notes from the Panel:

We found all of the Purofino cigars to be expertly crafted and the Piramide is no exception. Look for an effortless draw and consistent, even burn. Note a medium-bodied smoke that is slightly lighter and sweeter than the Gold Label Corona Real you'll also try. The added Costa Rican leaf in the filler and greater use of morron leaf makes this a very aromatic, rich and flavorful. Also look for a touch of herbs in this well-balanced smoke. Overall, a full, rich and very smooth cigar that delivers serious satisfaction. Consider pairing it with either a dark rum or your favorite bourbon.

DOM Petite Belicoso

Binder: Mexican Morron
Filler: Mexican Morron & Nicaraguan Ligero
Wrapper: 3-yr. Aged Sumatra-Seed Ecuadorian-Maduro
Strength (Mild 1, Full 10): 7
Panel Rating: 96

Notes from the Panel:

Wow! Grab your bootstraps and hang on! This is one of the better smokes we've every rated. Another superbly constructed smoke. Great draw. Lots of smoke. First off, be sure and savor the shaggy foot of this cigar when you light it. Don't burn it off, yet enjoy the first few puffs of this one. It's the most expensive tobacco in the cigar and defines this smoke's taste. Look for big taste in this power-packed little beauty. We found its taste to be a complex blend of spiciness and earthiness with definite overtones of coffee and chocolate evident. Overall, a fully satisfying experience. You'll want more. Pair it up with a tawny port, your favorite single malt scotch or rum.

Gold Label Corona Real

Binder: Mexican Morron
Filler: Mexican Morron & Nicaraguan Ligero
Wrapper: Sumatra-Seed Ecuadorian-Claro
Strength (Mild 1, Full 10): 7
Panel Rating: 92

Notes from the Panel:

We found the Corona Real to be a very aesthetically pleasing cigar, nicely shaped, smooth and constructed of well-chosen wrapper leaf. Again, an excellent draw and an even burn with a long gray-white ash. Note a medium-bodied smoke, rich, with warm roasted nutty tones evident dominating the flavor. Overall, a wonderful cigar, well balanced, complex and very smooth. You won't know which Purofino you liked best! The manufacturers suggest pairing it with either a dry Martini, a good Cognac or fine Armagnac.

The Pintor Cigars

Manufactured in the Costa Rican factory Tabacalera Tambor under the supervision of Don Douglas and Tony Borhani, manufacturer of Bahia cigars, the Pintor cigars are just what you'd expect them to be... A high quality, well constructed, complex and flavorful smoke. Don Douglas's family were among the best tobacco growers in the 1930's in Minnesota. Tabacalera Tambor is Costa Rica's only Premium cigar manufacturer and produces cigars in limited numbers from the most select tobacco in the world. The company prides itself on its Cuban heritage and 40 years experience making super premium cigars.

The Pintor line was first introduced in July 1998 and is available only in very limited quantities. The filler tobaccos are both Cuban-seed Dominican and Nicaraguan Ligero, the binder, Sumatran-seed Ecuadorian Olor and the wrapper is also a Colorado Maduro Sumatran-seed Ecuadorian leaf. Each cigar features tobacco from the same year's harvest, which is aged and cured prior to the third fermentation. The cigars are then rolled and aged again for an additional twelve months prior to being distributed. The Pintor line comes in four sizes, two of which you'll sample this month. Our panel found the smokes to be deserving of Tony Borhani's name and think that you're really going to enjoy these rich, full flavored smokes. For more information on Tony Borhani Cigar Lines, call them at 800-352-2442 or visit their web site at www.bahiacigars.com.

Robusto

Binder: Sumatran-Seed Ecuadorian Olor
Filler: Dominican & Nicaraguan Piloto Cubano
Wrapper: Sumatran-Seed Ecuadorian-CO Claro
Strength (Mild 1, Full 10): 6
Panel Rating: 89

Notes from the Panel:

Immediately note a very well constructed cigar offering a cool, even burn and billows of smoke. We found it to be a medium-bodied and packed with a rich and complex flavors including some leathery tones, a hint of nuttiness and toasted characteristics. We also found it to be somewhat peppery. Overall, a great smoke that hits your palate from several directions at once! Consider pairing it with a semi-sweet, woody port or robust, roasted Porter.

Toro

Binder: Sumatran-Seed Ecuadorian Olor
Filler: Dominican & Nicaraguan Piloto Cubano
Wrapper: Sumatran-Seed Ecuadorian-CO Claro
Strength (Mild 1, Full 10): 6.5
Panel Rating: 91

Notes from the Panel:

Our favorite of the Pintors smoked. Look for an easy draw, and even burn. The wrapper is almost a ruddy, rustic hue and shines due to it's slight oiliness. Another complex flavor profile offering hints of coffee bean, pepper and a slight floral, herbal character. We really liked it. Look for a very pleasant aroma and a long, rich finish. Overall, a solid smoke with tons of flavor. Highly recommended. Try smoking it with a robust Merlot or Irish Whiskey.

Ask Murl

Dear Murl,

I've got a bet going with my brother. He says that cigars are stored in Spanish cedar because it discourages tobacco beetles and I say it's because they help age the cigar and give it a woody character. We've got a box of Bahia's riding on the outcome and I'll split my winnings with ya if you tailor your answer in my favor home dog! So what's it gonna be, Murl? Am I smoking or busting out my credit card?

James Earl
Austin, TX

Yo Jimmy-Jo-Jim-Bob,

Is it true that everythang's real big in Texas? 'Cause you gonna need a whole lot of Spanish cedar to ward off them thar Texan Tobacco Beetles if they're the size of Ford Escorts. What I'm sayin' here, Tex, is that if all your ex's live in Texas, you'd better remember the Alamo, buddy. No wait, that wasn't was I was sayin' at all. Bottom line? Call Visa for that line of credit pal, 'cause you picked a great cigar to lose a bet over!

Spanish cedar was not in fact determined to be the perfect humidor lining because it imparts a pleasant flavor on your sticks. The real reason humidor manufacturers line their fine wood boxes with Spanish cedar is that the aromatic wood is particularly repellent to bugs in general, but especially that nasty little tobacco bastard, uh, beetle. This parasitic putrid pile of puss, know to the learned man as Lasioderma serricorne, eats cured, dry tobacco, boring small holes in your cigars both as a larval bambino and as an adult beetle. Storage in a fresh, Spanish cedar environment will kill these bugs or ward them off before they can corrupt your precious cache. Sorry for the bad news Jimmy-John.

Woof!
Murl.
