The award winning show, Sons of Anarchy, now has its own line of cigars thanks to the partnership between Twentieth Century Fox's Consumer Products division and Meier & Dutch cigar distributors. If you’re unfamiliar with the show, it’s about a gun-running close knit motorcycle club operating out of the fictitious town of Charming, California. One of the stars of the show is real-life cigar enthusiast Ron Perlman, who portrays the club's ominous and irritable former president, Clarence “Clay” Morrow, and since the start of the show back in 2008, Perlman can be seen smoking a cigar in almost every episode. The band on the cigar is also a perfect replica of the club’s Grim Reaper symbol – which is the same symbol that is on the back on every club member’s jacket.
The cigar itself is carefully crafted with top of the line construction that results in a razor sharp burn and lots of flavors. Starting from the inside, this Honduran handmade has loads of aged Cuban-seed Nicaraguan long fillers that are secured with a Nicaraguan Criollo ’98 binder and is finished with a beautiful, slightly toothy, and extra-fermented Ecuadorian Sumatra Oscuro. After lighting, you’ll find flavors of oak, tobacco, cherry, earth, chocolate, and spice on the finish which fades somewhat towards the last third. Our panel loved this medium to full smoke and suggested a bourbon as a perfect pairing.
Honduras has been a tobacco growing and cigar manufacturing area for hundreds of years, but it was the Communist revolution in Cuba that really put Honduras on the map. In the 1960s, many Cuban cigar makers fled their homeland and arrived in Honduras to re-establish their way of life. The immigrants took advantage of the climate, soil, and geography, which were well-suited to tobacco growing, and began producing high quality cigars. The center of the Honduran cigar industry is the city of Danli and the nearby Jamastran Valley. The majority of the world’s pure Corojo tobacco is grown here, now that Cuba has stopped production of this iconic, spicy, and rich variety in favor of Corojo hybrids. Other important areas of Honduran cigar production include the Talanga Valley, Copan, and Trojes.
