As an idiom, the term “sombremesa” doesn’t have an exact translation in English, but literally it means “over the table”. According to the manufacture, “It is an idiom used among the Latin culture to describe the leisurely time spent tableside after you have finished dining, but before you rise. It is the experience of lingering casually with family and friends in conversation, relaxing, drinking, smoking, and enjoying each other’s company. Sobremesa is one of life’s simplest, yet greatest pleasures.”

The Sobremesa marks the return of former CEO of Drew Estate, Steve Saka, and his new company Dunbarton Tobacco and Trust. Hailing from Nicaragua at the prestigious Joya de Nicaragua cigar factory, this medium to full-bodied stogie has a long-filler blend of Nicaraguan tobaccos and Pennsylvania Broadleaf ligero, a Mexican binder from Matacapan, and a dark Rosado wrapper. Light it up and you’ll find evolving flavors of nougat, spice, coffee, and cedar. This cigar will be made in limited quantities as the tobacco itself will dictate how many cigars it can make, so be sure to stock up! Our panel recommended pairing this smoke with a warm drink like Stonewall Jackson, hot cider and bourbon.

The Nicaraguan cigar industry originated when Cuban cigar makers escaped the revolution and re-established their livelihood in Nicaragua with Cuban-seed tobacco. Blessed with dark, rich soil, their new home was ideal for tobacco cultivation and Nicaragua quickly became known for cigars that rivaled Cuban quality. Unfortunately, revolution and war came to Nicaragua in the 1980s and devastated the industry, but it’s rebounded dramatically and is once again producing tobacco considered by many to be the finest in the world.

The Esteli Valley is in many ways the heart of Nicaraguan production and is known for its very powerful and spicy tobacco. The Jalapa Valley produces arguably the finest tobacco in the country: somewhat sweeter and less intense than Esteli, but extremely complex. The tobacco of the Condega Valley is often described as a blend of the other two regions.
