Named after Shakespeare’s literary masterpiece, Romeo y Julieta has been around for about 143 years with its start in Cuba in 1875. After becoming incredibly popular during the 20th century, they moved to the Dominican Republic due to the Cuban Embargo. Even though most of Romeo y Julieta cigars are still made at the Tabacalera de García factory in the Dominican Republic, some, like the Romeo y Julieta Reserve, are made across the Caribbean Sea in Honduras at the La Flor de Copán factory. Released in 2007, this is the first time since the early 1990s that a Honduran-made Romeo y Julieta has entered the cigar world and it’s a beauty! Just look at it… it shines (literally) with that oily and dark Nicaraguan wrapper. Inside, it’s chocked full of Nicaraguan and Honduran long-leafs that are held by a Nicaraguan binder. Once lit, you will notice a flavorful core of earth, tobacco, peppery sweetness and hints of cedar and chocolate. We love this cigar and Cigar Aficionado agrees with us, giving it a rating of ‘90’. Enjoy your Romeo y Julieta Reserve with an espresso.

Honduras has been a tobacco growing and cigar manufacturing area for hundreds of years, but it was the Communist revolution in Cuba that really put Honduras on the map. In the 1960s, many Cuban cigar makers fled their homeland and arrived in Honduras to re-establish their way of life. The immigrants took advantage of the climate, soil, and geography, which were well-suited to tobacco growing, and began producing high quality cigars. The center of the Honduran cigar industry is the city of Danli and the nearby Jamastran Valley. The majority of the world’s pure Corojo tobacco is grown here, now that Cuba has stopped production of this iconic, spicy, and rich variety in favor of Corojo hybrids. Other important areas of Honduran cigar production include the Talanga Valley, Copan, and Trojes.
