Rocky Patel Fusion – Take two! Several years ago, Rocky Patel released the Vintage Fusion with the concept of blending the Vintage 1990 and the Vintage 1992, and it came across with mixed reviews. A good idea in theory but as the saying goes: “Close, but no cigar.” With that said, Rocky learned that some things just don’t mix well and set out to make this revamped version that is full of flavor and is sure to be a hit. The Rocky Patel Fusion is a luxurious, deeply complex cigar with a heady Cuban-esque character. Starting from the inside, the Fusion has a Cuban-seed mixture of aged Nicaraguan long-fillers that is secured with a Nicaraguan binder and finished with a fermented Ecuadorian Sun Grown wrapper that is rich, toothy, and practically dripping with oil. This medium to full smoke has a lavish combination of wood, spice, and leather with a hint of sweetness. Our panel loves this new version and suggested pairing it with an Islay Scotch.
Honduras has been a tobacco growing and cigar manufacturing area for hundreds of years, but it was the Communist revolution in Cuba that really put Honduras on the map. In the 1960s, many Cuban cigar makers fled their homeland and arrived in Honduras to re-establish their way of life. The immigrants took advantage of the climate, soil, and geography, which were well-suited to tobacco growing, and began producing high quality cigars. The center of the Honduran cigar industry is the city of Danli and the nearby Jamastran Valley. The majority of the world’s pure Corojo tobacco is grown here, now that Cuba has stopped production of this iconic, spicy, and rich variety in favor of Corojo hybrids. Other important areas of Honduran cigar production include the Talanga Valley, Copan, and Trojes.
