Perla del Mar may translate to “Pearl of the Sea,” but there’s nothing delicate about the flavor packed into the Corojo Toro. Originally a Cuban brand, Perla del Mar was revived and expanded by J.C. Newman, America’s oldest family-owned premium cigar company. Founded in 1895, J.C. Newman has spent generations building a reputation for craftsmanship and quality, and the Perla del Mar line showcases their ability to blend tradition with modern flavor profiles.

This box-pressed Toro features an Ecuadorian Corojo wrapper over all-Nicaraguan binder and filler tobaccos sourced from multiple growing regions. Corojo wrappers are famous for delivering spice and richness, and this cigar wastes no time getting started. Expect notes of black pepper, earth, espresso, dark wood, and subtle dried fruit sweetness throughout the smoke. As it develops, the profile softens slightly into warm coffee and cocoa tones while still maintaining a lively peppery finish.

An Old Fashioned is a nearly perfect companion for this cigar. The cocktail’s bitters, orange oils, and bourbon sweetness enhance the cigar’s spice and earthiness without muting its complexity. It’s a pairing that feels sophisticated but never stuffy. The Perla del Mar Corojo Toro is a fantastic choice for smokers who enjoy fuller flavors, rich complexity, and a cigar that evolves noticeably from first light to final draw.

The Nicaraguan cigar industry originated when Cuban cigar makers escaped the revolution and re-established their livelihood in Nicaragua with Cuban-seed tobacco. Blessed with dark, rich soil, their new home was ideal for tobacco cultivation and Nicaragua quickly became known for cigars that rivaled Cuban quality. Unfortunately, revolution and war came to Nicaragua in the 1980s and devastated the industry, but it’s rebounded dramatically and is once again producing tobacco considered by many to be the finest in the world.

The Esteli Valley is in many ways the heart of Nicaraguan production and is known for its very powerful and spicy tobacco. The Jalapa Valley produces arguably the finest tobacco in the country: somewhat sweeter and less intense than Esteli, but extremely complex. The tobacco of the Condega Valley is often described as a blend of the other two regions.
