The Oz Family Cigars Karatoba Toro is one of the most intriguing boutique releases in recent years, blending bold flavor with a deeply personal story. Created by Tim Ozgener, whose family helped shape the premium cigar world through the iconic CAO brand, the Karatoba continues his passion for combining heritage, creativity, and unconventional flavor profiles. The name itself merges two Turkish words: “Kara,” meaning dark or black, and “Toba,” inspired by Indonesia’s volcanic Lake Toba, a nod to the Sumatra-seed wrapper used in the blend.
Wrapped in an Ecuadorian-grown Sumatra leaf, the Karatoba features a Nicaraguan binder with fillers from Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic. The result is a medium-to-full-bodied cigar that balances savory richness with touches of sweetness in a way that feels unique from the first puff. Expect notes of mixed nuts, maple sweetness, pepper, earth, and a subtle salty quality that gives the cigar a mouthwatering character. Some smokers even pick up flavors reminiscent of stewed meats and rich red sauce, adding an unexpectedly savory depth that keeps the profile fascinating throughout the smoke.
A Boulevardier is an ideal pairing here. The cocktail’s combination of bourbon, Campari, and sweet vermouth enhances both the cigar’s spice and sweet-savory complexity without overpowering it. The slight bitterness from the Campari also helps reset the palate between draws. The Karatoba is perfect for smokers who enjoy cigars that break away from predictable flavor profiles and deliver something memorable from start to finish.
The Nicaraguan cigar industry originated when Cuban cigar makers escaped the revolution and re-established their livelihood in Nicaragua with Cuban-seed tobacco. Blessed with dark, rich soil, their new home was ideal for tobacco cultivation and Nicaragua quickly became known for cigars that rivaled Cuban quality. Unfortunately, revolution and war came to Nicaragua in the 1980s and devastated the industry, but it’s rebounded dramatically and is once again producing tobacco considered by many to be the finest in the world.
The Esteli Valley is in many ways the heart of Nicaraguan production and is known for its very powerful and spicy tobacco. The Jalapa Valley produces arguably the finest tobacco in the country: somewhat sweeter and less intense than Esteli, but extremely complex. The tobacco of the Condega Valley is often described as a blend of the other two regions.
