The Obsidian Toro doesn’t just make a statement—it growls it. This powerhouse of a cigar is a masterclass in balance, delivering full-throttle strength with a surprisingly silky edge. Handcrafted with Cuban-seed long-fillers from Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic, this dark beauty unleashes bold, layered tobacco flavors from the first draw. Peek at the foot and you’ll see the artistry: a fierce core of rich ligeros wrapped in a halo of lighter visos and secos for complexity that builds with every puff. Holding it all together is a rare Criollo ’98 binder, prized for its mellow spice and creamy undertones. But the real showstopper is the dark, oily Brazilian Habano ligero wrapper—not your typical maduro, but stronger, punchier, and dripping with attitude. Light it up, and brace yourself for a flood of espresso, cracked pepper, earthy toast, and a velvety cream finish. Dense, chewy smoke coats the palate like a heavyweight champ in velvet gloves. This is a bold cigar lover’s dream—luxurious, intense, and unforgettable. Pair it with a deep, aged rum and let the night unfold.
Though tobacco is indigenous to Hispaniola, the tobacco industry in the Dominican Republic existed in the shadow of Cuba’s dominance through the 1960s. When the exodus of Cuban cigar makers began in the wake of the revolution, many decided the Dominican Republic would be ideal for the resumption of their livelihoods. Unrest in Nicaragua in the 1980s fueled the Dominican cigar industry further. The country now makes more than half of the premium cigars imported into the U.S.
The Cibao Valley and the nearby city of Santiago are the center of cigar production in the Dominican Republic. Three main varieties are grown here: the mild and native Olor Dominicano; the intense Piloto Cubano, brought from the Vuelta Abajo of Cuba; and San Vicente, a milder and more acidic Piloto hybrid. Dominican puros were once unheard of as it was widely thought impossible to grow quality wrapper leaf on the island, but new growing techniques are now allowing some exceptional puros to be produced.
