Man O’ War comes from AJ Fernandez’s operation in Estelí, Nicaragua, and its bold personality extends well beyond the name. The 6.1 × 54 Torpedo pairs a dark, oily Ecuadorian Habano wrapper with a Nicaraguan binder and aged, Cuban-seed Nicaraguan long-fillers. Medium to full-bodied, it opens with assertive spice and wood before developing a richer combination of oak, earth, coffee, and cocoa. A touch of vanilla and lingering sweet spice add contrast to the stronger flavors, giving the blend more to offer than strength alone. There’s plenty of intensity here, but the underlying richness keeps the profile from becoming one-dimensional. Pair it with Jameson Irish Whiskey. The whiskey’s vanilla, nutty notes, and toasted wood should complement the cigar’s oak and cocoa, while its subtle sweetness provides a counterpoint to the spicy edge. We’d keep this pairing simple, serving the whiskey neat or with a small splash of water so the individual flavors remain easy to pick out.

The Nicaraguan cigar industry originated when Cuban cigar makers escaped the revolution and re-established their livelihood in Nicaragua with Cuban-seed tobacco. Blessed with dark, rich soil, their new home was ideal for tobacco cultivation and Nicaragua quickly became known for cigars that rivaled Cuban quality. Unfortunately, revolution and war came to Nicaragua in the 1980s and devastated the industry, but it’s rebounded dramatically and is once again producing tobacco considered by many to be the finest in the world.

The Esteli Valley is in many ways the heart of Nicaraguan production and is known for its very powerful and spicy tobacco. The Jalapa Valley produces arguably the finest tobacco in the country: somewhat sweeter and less intense than Esteli, but extremely complex. The tobacco of the Condega Valley is often described as a blend of the other two regions.
