The 19th century American politician, Henry Clay, was not only known as “The Great Compromiser” but also for being a staunch US nationalist. In fact, he believed the only way to secure Florida and the Northwest for America was to fight British imperiousness, which played a big part in the beginning of the War of 1812. Clay and his supporters were known as “War Hawks” – a term which is still used in political circles for those who favor war as an ultimate resolution of a conflict. The Henry Clay War Hawk in your shipment today is a feisty blend created to honor his lasting influence. Hailing from Honduras, this smoke features long-fillers from Honduras and a Connecticut Broadleaf binder, and is all wrapped up with an Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper. Once lit, you will enjoy spicy yet balanced notes of earth, cocoa, and cedar. Not only did we love this smoke but so did Cigar Aficionado which gave it a well deserved rating of 95 along with the honor of spot number 10 in their Top 25 Cigars of 2020. Pair this exquisite smoke with your favorite pilsner; one panel member suggested Firestone Walker Brewing Company Pivo Pilsner.

Honduras has been a tobacco growing and cigar manufacturing area for hundreds of years, but it was the Communist revolution in Cuba that really put Honduras on the map. In the 1960s, many Cuban cigar makers fled their homeland and arrived in Honduras to re-establish their way of life. The immigrants took advantage of the climate, soil, and geography, which were well-suited to tobacco growing, and began producing high quality cigars. The center of the Honduran cigar industry is the city of Danli and the nearby Jamastran Valley. The majority of the world’s pure Corojo tobacco is grown here, now that Cuba has stopped production of this iconic, spicy, and rich variety in favor of Corojo hybrids. Other important areas of Honduran cigar production include the Talanga Valley, Copan, and Trojes.
