Casa Toraño represents the long-standing tradition of the Toraño family, whose cigar-making roots date back to 1916. This blend, originally created as a private “house cigar” for rolling events, became so popular it was eventually released to the public. Crafted in Nicaragua, it features an Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper over a Nicaraguan binder and a blend of Dominican and Nicaraguan fillers. This cigar delivers a smooth, mellow-to-medium bodied experience with impressive complexity. The profile opens with creamy sweetness and soft cedar, followed by subtle spice and a gentle peppery earthiness. As it progresses, the flavors evolve into a balanced mix of toast, light nuts, and a touch of natural sweetness, making it both flavorful and approachable. Despite its complexity, it remains smooth enough for newer smokers while still engaging for seasoned enthusiasts. Casa Toraño pairs beautifully with an Appleton Estate 12 Year Rum, whose caramel and oak notes enhance the cigar’s natural sweetness and spice. Its versatility also makes it suitable for morning or afternoon enjoyment. The cigar earned an excellent panel rating of 94, reflecting its balance, flavor complexity, and overall craftsmanship. With its rich heritage and crowd-pleasing profile, Casa Toraño stands as a polished, dependable cigar that showcases the Toraño family’s blending expertise.
The Nicaraguan cigar industry originated when Cuban cigar makers escaped the revolution and re-established their livelihood in Nicaragua with Cuban-seed tobacco. Blessed with dark, rich soil, their new home was ideal for tobacco cultivation and Nicaragua quickly became known for cigars that rivaled Cuban quality. Unfortunately, revolution and war came to Nicaragua in the 1980s and devastated the industry, but it’s rebounded dramatically and is once again producing tobacco considered by many to be the finest in the world.
The Esteli Valley is in many ways the heart of Nicaraguan production and is known for its very powerful and spicy tobacco. The Jalapa Valley produces arguably the finest tobacco in the country: somewhat sweeter and less intense than Esteli, but extremely complex. The tobacco of the Condega Valley is often described as a blend of the other two regions.
