Black Works Studio, founded in 2015 by James Brown of Black Label Trading Company, is known for pushing aesthetic and blending boundaries through small-batch, artisanal production. The Hornet Corona Larga began as an event-only release before earning a permanent place in the portfolio due to overwhelming demand. Visually striking, the cigar features candela tobacco striping over a dark Ecuadorian Maduro wrapper, along with a candela-wrapped foot that enhances both appearance and flavor. Inside, a Nicaraguan Habano binder and Nicaraguan fillers provide the foundation for its full-bodied profile.
Flavor delivery is layered and dynamic, opening with natural sweetness and grassy brightness from the candela before transitioning into darker notes of cocoa, leather, espresso bean, and earth. Black pepper and baking spice build steadily, creating an assertive yet controlled smoking experience. The corona larga size allows the blend to evolve gradually, rewarding patient smokers. Bold but refined, The Hornet demonstrates Black Works Studio’s commitment to innovation and balance. For contrast and clarity, this cigar pairs well with green tea, which refreshes the palate and highlights the cigar’s complexity.
The Nicaraguan cigar industry originated when Cuban cigar makers escaped the revolution and re-established their livelihood in Nicaragua with Cuban-seed tobacco. Blessed with dark, rich soil, their new home was ideal for tobacco cultivation and Nicaragua quickly became known for cigars that rivaled Cuban quality. Unfortunately, revolution and war came to Nicaragua in the 1980s and devastated the industry, but it’s rebounded dramatically and is once again producing tobacco considered by many to be the finest in the world.
The Esteli Valley is in many ways the heart of Nicaraguan production and is known for its very powerful and spicy tobacco. The Jalapa Valley produces arguably the finest tobacco in the country: somewhat sweeter and less intense than Esteli, but extremely complex. The tobacco of the Condega Valley is often described as a blend of the other two regions.
