Tony Borhani, founder of Bahia cigars, takes his business seriously. In a personal quest for stogie knowledge, he spent three years exploring cigar territory in Central and South America. He met growers, rollers and master blenders, studying their methods and styles. To this day, he constantly combines his knowledge of traditional production techniques with new ideas and secret methods that extend the art of processing, curing, aging and rolling our favorite aromatic leaf. Tobacco used for all Bahia cigars is grown at the best plantations in Nicaragua, the Dominican Republic, and Ecuador, and processed under the control, supervision and demanding methods of Tony Borhani and Don Douglas.

Bahia Matanzas Perfecto No. 3 has been hailed as a crowning achievement for the Bahia line and our panel is inclined to agree. Medium to full in body, the Matanzas is filled with a luscious blend of Nicaraguan and Honduran long-fillers, secured with a Honduran binder, and is finished with a stunning Ecuadorian Habano Sun-Grown wrapper. The result is a spicy and cedary profile with hints of coffee, earth, and a touch of sweetness. Enjoy with a dark rum.

Honduras has been a tobacco growing and cigar manufacturing area for hundreds of years, but it was the Communist revolution in Cuba that really put Honduras on the map. In the 1960s, many Cuban cigar makers fled their homeland and arrived in Honduras to re-establish their way of life. The immigrants took advantage of the climate, soil, and geography, which were well-suited to tobacco growing, and began producing high quality cigars. The center of the Honduran cigar industry is the city of Danli and the nearby Jamastran Valley. The majority of the world’s pure Corojo tobacco is grown here, now that Cuba has stopped production of this iconic, spicy, and rich variety in favor of Corojo hybrids. Other important areas of Honduran cigar production include the Talanga Valley, Copan, and Trojes.
