The AVO Heritage Robusto pays tribute to the legacy of musician and cigar visionary Avo Uvezian, whose partnership with Davidoff helped establish AVO as one of the Dominican Republic's premier premium cigar brands. Created to offer a richer profile than many traditional AVO blends, the Heritage line combines exceptional Dominican tobaccos with a bolder wrapper while maintaining the elegance and balance the brand is known for. Its refined character earned it an impressive 90-point rating from Cigar Aficionado. An Ecuadorian Habano wrapper surrounds a Dominican binder and carefully aged Dominican fillers, creating a medium-to-full-bodied smoke with remarkable complexity. Rich flavors of cedar, roasted coffee, baking spices, black pepper, leather, and toasted nuts unfold gradually, while subtle creaminess keeps the profile smooth throughout the experience. The recommended Cold Brew Negroni offers an inspired pairing. The cocktail's bittersweet botanicals, coffee notes, and citrus accents enhance the cigar's spice while highlighting its roasted coffee and cedar characteristics. Bold yet sophisticated, the AVO Heritage Robusto delivers a balanced smoking experience that appeals to both longtime AVO fans and smokers looking to explore the richer side of Dominican cigars.
Though tobacco is indigenous to Hispaniola, the tobacco industry in the Dominican Republic existed in the shadow of Cuba’s dominance through the 1960s. When the exodus of Cuban cigar makers began in the wake of the revolution, many decided the Dominican Republic would be ideal for the resumption of their livelihoods. Unrest in Nicaragua in the 1980s fueled the Dominican cigar industry further. The country now makes more than half of the premium cigars imported into the U.S.
The Cibao Valley and the nearby city of Santiago are the center of cigar production in the Dominican Republic. Three main varieties are grown here: the mild and native Olor Dominicano; the intense Piloto Cubano, brought from the Vuelta Abajo of Cuba; and San Vicente, a milder and more acidic Piloto hybrid. Dominican puros were once unheard of as it was widely thought impossible to grow quality wrapper leaf on the island, but new growing techniques are now allowing some exceptional puros to be produced.
