Astral is a time-honored brand from Honduras that was once a beloved favorite of serious cigar enthusiasts. The brand regularly outsold many of today’s boutique and nationally known brands because of its smooth flavor profile, top-notch quality, and inevitable consistency. The good news for club members is that a sufficient quantity of well-aged Astral handmades have been unearthed including this gem, Astral Grand Reserve. Carefully crafted by hand in Danli, Honduras, the cigar is chock full of superior long-fillers from the Dominican Republic and Honduras. They’re wrapped in a thick, toothy, milk-chocolate-brown Habano wrapper. Thanks to five years of post-roll aging, these medium-bodied stogies promote a hearty, but silky-smooth smoke layered with subtle hints of toast, cedar, and earth finished by a surprising dash of pepper. The Astral may generate an enjoyable sense of nostalgia for many. This is a stick you can enjoy down to the nub. Astral has been consistently highly rated in Cigar Aficionado and Smoke Magazine and we know that you're going to enjoy this well-made stogie. Complement this smoke with an oak-heavy chardonnay.
Honduras has been a tobacco growing and cigar manufacturing area for hundreds of years, but it was the Communist revolution in Cuba that really put Honduras on the map. In the 1960s, many Cuban cigar makers fled their homeland and arrived in Honduras to re-establish their way of life. The immigrants took advantage of the climate, soil, and geography, which were well-suited to tobacco growing, and began producing high quality cigars. The center of the Honduran cigar industry is the city of Danli and the nearby Jamastran Valley. The majority of the world’s pure Corojo tobacco is grown here, now that Cuba has stopped production of this iconic, spicy, and rich variety in favor of Corojo hybrids. Other important areas of Honduran cigar production include the Talanga Valley, Copan, and Trojes.
