Rakesh “Rocky” Patel has done it again and created a one of kind cigar that has the flavors and aromas of the bygone era from decades ago. Olde World Maduro was named one of the Top 25 Cigars in the World by Cigar Aficionado in 2009, so this cigar is sure to please. Introduced in 2005 at the IPCPR as Master Blend 7XX it was later reintroduced and released in 2006 at RTDA (Retail Tobacco Dealers of America) show with the name Olde World Reserve and was Rocky Patel’s most expensive creation at the time due to the premium tobaccos used. Filled and bound with Nicaraguan leaves and wrapped in an oily Broadleaf Maduro, this cigar is bursting with complex flavors and aromas. Upon lighting, you will get a rich tobacco flavor that will open up to espresso and oak with an overall sweetness. Through out the smoke as a whole you will also get hints of earth, spices, and chocolate. The smoke itself has a rich aroma of coffee and wood that will enhance the experience. Don’t be fooled by the size, the Lancero (also known as a “Long Panatela”) is one of the most difficult cigars to roll and blend, and many cigar professionals prefer this size due to the intense and complex flavors. Due to the richness of the flavors, we found that a nice porter pairs very well.
Honduras has been a tobacco growing and cigar manufacturing area for hundreds of years, but it was the Communist revolution in Cuba that really put Honduras on the map. In the 1960s, many Cuban cigar makers fled their homeland and arrived in Honduras to re-establish their way of life. The immigrants took advantage of the climate, soil, and geography, which were well-suited to tobacco growing, and began producing high quality cigars. The center of the Honduran cigar industry is the city of Danli and the nearby Jamastran Valley. The majority of the world’s pure Corojo tobacco is grown here, now that Cuba has stopped production of this iconic, spicy, and rich variety in favor of Corojo hybrids. Other important areas of Honduran cigar production include the Talanga Valley, Copan, and Trojes.
