You know you’re in for a full bodied smoking experience when you hold this bold, top-shelf handmade and feel the heft. With the Africa by Don Lino you're in for not just a full-bodied smoking experience, but a flavor safari. But first run your fingertips up, down and around this dark beauty to better appreciate its smooth oily wrapper. Handmade in Nicaragua, this unusual stogie features an exotic blend of premium tobaccos from, as the name implies, Africa but it’s also packed with tobaccos from Honduras, Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic that have been patiently fermented and extensively aged. Don Lino then adds some of the world's finest Cameroon wrapper leaf to the filler which spices up the cigar even more (and is one of the characteristics that makes the cigar unusual). The layers of exquisite flavors are enriched by a Nicaraguan-grown Habana-seed wrapper. They start out cedary and are followed by spicy cinnamon with a leathery finish. Look for an even burn, a medium draw and voluminous clouds of smoke. Enjoy your Don Lino Africa with an espresso.
The Nicaraguan cigar industry originated when Cuban cigar makers escaped the revolution and re-established their livelihood in Nicaragua with Cuban-seed tobacco. Blessed with dark, rich soil, their new home was ideal for tobacco cultivation and Nicaragua quickly became known for cigars that rivaled Cuban quality. Unfortunately, revolution and war came to Nicaragua in the 1980s and devastated the industry, but it’s rebounded dramatically and is once again producing tobacco considered by many to be the finest in the world.
The Esteli Valley is in many ways the heart of Nicaraguan production and is known for its very powerful and spicy tobacco. The Jalapa Valley produces arguably the finest tobacco in the country: somewhat sweeter and less intense than Esteli, but extremely complex. The tobacco of the Condega Valley is often described as a blend of the other two regions.
