Camacho SLR (Special Limited Reserve) Toro

Camacho SLRThe Camacho SLR (Special Limited Reserve) was released by the Eiroa family in 2003. Included in the blend is a special tobacco called pinareño, whose seeds were brought with the family from the Pinar del Río region of Cuba. They used to produce their cigars in Nicaragua, but today the Eiroa's company, Tabacos Ranchos Jamastran, grows nearly all of the tobacco for their cigars in the Jamastran Valley of Honduras and manufactures the cigars in their Danli factory. We say "nearly all" of their tobaccos come from Honduras because some of their wrappers are from Connecticut, USA, and, in a bold move, they blended a very limited edition cigar (called Liberty) that included small amounts of pre-embargo Cuban tobacco they'd been holding on to! The SLR Toro provides a flawless draw, features a long firm ash, and delivers ample smoke volume. It is a well-balanced, powerfully full-bodied cigar with hints of coffee and cedar flavors. Look for cream and anise notes in the finish. Overall, a very tasty Honduran puro. Need more praise than our panel's? How about the fact that it was named as one of Cigar Aficionado's Top 50 Cigars. Consider pairing it with a 10-year or older vintage dark rum, lightly chilled.

Cifuentes Summer Selection 2005 Agosto Figurado

Cifuentes Summer SelectionIn their continuing tribute to legendary cigar maestro Ramon Cifuentes who developed the Partagas brand, cigar masters Daniel Nuñez and Benji Menendez have added another gem to the Partagas line. The Partagas brand is particularly well-known for its consistent quality and bold tobacco flavors. Especially sought-after are the limited edition seasonal Cifuentes blends. The Seasonal Blend Fall 2004 was a big hit for General Cigar who followed up with the Summer Selection 2005. Both are now known for their powerful line ups-keeping us at the club looking forward to a 2006 release! The Agosto figurado we're featuring may be small in stature, but it packs a medium-to-full-bodied punch. Note the attractive San Agustin Honduran wrapper with its lovely chestnut-brown hue. This leaf, in combination with filler leaves from the Dominican Republic, Honduras, Mexico and rare leaves from the Nicaraguan island of Ometepe, provides an aromatic, woodsy, lightly floral burn aroma. Due to their seasonal nature, these are one-of-a-kind cigars that will not be replicated. Expect notes of rich tobacco flavor with an earthy feel and an aromatic finish. As the cigar builds toward the bulge in the figurado, the spice will kick in to its fullest. Holds up well against single malt scotch.

Oliveros XL Double Maduro XL/55 Toro

Oliveros XL Double MaduroFirst off, for the lovely lady cigar fans out there, don't be put off by the name on this cigar's label ("XL for Men"). Fact is, if you love full-bodied (and we do mean full-bodied) cigars, it doesn't matter what gender you are-this cigar is a pleaser (and perhaps, for the slightly masochistic, pleasantly punishing). The blend is a powerful tri-nation blend of Dominican and hearty Honduran Nicaraguan tobaccos. But the real focus here is on the gorgeous Brazilian maduro wrapper, and the USA (Connecticut) maduro binder. A maduro binder? If this catches your attention, it's for good reason; this is not commonly done-most maduro tobaccos are restricted to the wrapper. But hey, this is the XL 'Double' Maduro, so they've doubled up on the maduro tobaccos. Obviously, a maduro binder has nothing to do with aesthetic appeal, since you never see it. In this cigar, it lends a particularly robust character, while the Brazilian tobaccos retain a depth of sweetness that works to balance the rip-roaring tobacco flavors. Expect notes of singed leather and an earthy, light spiciness in this cool-burning cigar. Highly complex, the XL/55 toro is best enjoyed after a full meal, with an XO cognac (the "55" by the way refers to the ring gauge. The line also offers an XL/52 and an XL/60).

Trilogy Tri-Press Maduro Robusto

The first thing you'll notice about this cigar is the unusual triangular shape; one part slick marketing campaign (ties in with the Trilogy theme: 3 blends, each in 3 sizes), with an equal measure of ergonomics (fits perfectly between the fingers, especially for those who use the "pencil hold" grip on their cigars). Next thing you can't miss is the sheer beauty of this cigar. The Brazilian Arapiraca Maduro comes from the Northwest corner of the Amazon Rainforest. Exotic indeed, this unusual wrapper possesses a naturally sweet aroma. The triangular shape, while not rolled that way, presents a unique challenge to the cigar maker. The box-pressing of this cigar in to a triangular shape requires that it be rolled with careful attention to the wrapper tension, with enough give to tolerate the triangular shape it will ultimately assume (too tight, and the whole thing will split). The blend consists of Columbian and Honduran long-fillers surrounded by an Indonesian (Sumatran) binder. Look for a medium-to-full bodied smoke with full-flavored tobacco notes and a spicy start. Expect the complexity of flavors to continue in a masterful performance of finesse as they come on strong, but remain forever smooth, culminating in a wonderfully full cedary finish. Overall, a fantastic cigar-tremendously rich, bold, and packed with flavor. Pair with a Reposado Tequila, on ice.

Viejo '99 Presidente Churchill

The Puros Indios Cigar Factory, run by Rolando Reyes, Sr., is located in Danli, Honduras. With over 60 years of cigar making experience, we could very easily refer to him as a "Viejo Pro" (Viejo is Spanish for old if you didn't know). A few years back we featured the Viejo '98 (Toro). The Viejo '99 stands apart from the '98 in that it uses no Jamaican fillers; the principal tobacco of the '99 blend is rich, full-flavored Honduran tobacco. And with the Presidente Churchill we've sent you, you'll have plenty of that Honduran tobacco, along with Brazilian, Dominican and Nicaraguan fillers. Take a moment to admire the rustic, deep brown Ecuadorian wrapper, lightly oily and just begging to be lit. So, what's so "Viejo" about it? Well, the '99 refers to the year in which the tobacco was harvested. For four full years after that, these tobaccos were carefully and expertly aged to create a mellow, highly matured flavor that is matched in age by complexity. And one of our particularly keen cigar distributors has been sitting on a small stockpile of these gems, letting them age even further in the box. Production of each vintage is limited to 50,000 cigars per year, making this a rare, highly sought after stick-not to mention the last Viejo of the 20th century. Expect this medium-bodied cigar to present nutty tones to the palate, enriched by a floral aroma and traces of a lingering woodiness in the finish. Consider pairing with a dry Chardonnay.
