It takes over 60 years of cigar making experience to create a cigar like this! Rolando Reyes Sr. started rolling cigars in Cuba at the age of 14 and has worked for such prestigious Cuban brands as H. Upmann, Romeo y Julieta, and Partagas, to name a few. In pre-Castro Cuba, his cigar factory was manufacturing over 6 million cigars a year! He's widely recognized as one of the most talented tobacco blenders alive—so anything he's created is a real treat to the palate and eyes alike. But his full-bodied cigars are probably the most admired by our panel, and Cienfuegos (meaning "100 fires") is one that lives up to its reputation and name. Wrapped in a gorgeous, four-year-aged Nicaraguan Habana 2000 wrapper and filled with full-bodied Dominican long leaves, expect aggressive yet smooth tobacco flavors. Note the very spicy, earthy quality of this cigar as it burns with a heavy smoke volume and pleasant, woody aroma. With its long-lasting finish, this cigar is nicely complemented by single-malt scotch.
A bit of cigar trivia for you budding aficionados out there: the first tobacco plantations in Cuba were developed on the eastern side of the island, in the provinces of Cienfuegos and Oriente (due to their accessibility to larger rivers like the Cauto, which allowed for the easy smuggling of tobacco under the watchful eye of the Spanish-ruled monopolies). OK, so maybe you don't quite have the 60+ years of cigar trade knowledge that Rolando Reyes Sr. has, but hey, it's a start!
Danli Reserve Sun Grown Torpedo
Created by Caribe, makers of Camacho and Baccarat, Danli Reserve is a complex, medium to full-bodied cigar from Julio Eiroa and son Christian, celebrating the cigar-making capital of Danli, Honduras. Comprised of an exquisite blend of rich, hearty long-leaf tobaccos grown in the Jamastran Valley, enveloped by a smooth, leathery, dark natural Habano-seed leaf, this powerful, yet balanced cigar issues an assortment of satisfying flavors. The peppery start promptly mellows into a super-smooth, highly earthy flavor that's robust and densely nuanced. The limited edition torpedo featured here is rolled in very limited quantities on a seasonal basis. Its hefty ring gauge ensures a smooth draw which, due to the exquisitely dark and oily sun-grown wrapper delivers full-flavored notes of earthy, spicy pepper which by mid-smoke again pick up to deliver the intensely hearty character one would expect from a Caribe-made powerhouse. Best after a meal, enjoy it with your favorite cognac or full-bodied red wine.
Contrary to what some of you might be thinking, we didn't include this cigar in your shipment for the sole purpose of giving you an opportunity to wise crack with your friends (for example, they ask, "whatcha enjoyin' there buddy?" and you reply "oh, just my big ol' Fighting Cock Torpedo…") While it's a heck of a lot of fun to see people's reactions when this inevitably happens, this originally Philippines-produced cigar is a genuinely tasty, medium-to-full-bodied treat, well-worthy of being featured in our club. And its name actually comes from the Philippine national sport of cock-fighting, not some cheesy marketing ploy. Some years ago, however, production was moved to Nicaragua, where the masters at Felipe Gregorio are now responsible for their creation. Always recognized for consistency, every one our panel has ever smoked over the years has been very well constructed and wrapped to just the right firmness, offering a nearly perfect draw. We found the torpedo to have a wonderful, medium-to-full-bodied, complex tobacco taste with unmistakable notes of leather. Look for a complex aroma with some strong spicy and cedar notes, pleasantly balanced by a lightly herbal finish. Consider pairing this one with a Sauvignon Blanc or an IPA.
H. Upmann Vintage Cameroon Robusto
German banker Herman Upmann founded H. Upmann Cigars in Havana back in 1844. Now celebrating 162 years in the business of creating premium cigars, the brand is beyond legendary. Their first Dominican-produced brand to hit the states surfaced in 1975; this original H. Upmann line used rare Cameroon wrappers, as does this month's selection, which was introduced in 2003. The rich, medium-bodied flavor and retro look are intentionally reminiscent of 1950s Cuba. We found the draw effortless, providing plumes of smoke that were in sharp contrast to the nearly dormant character displayed between draws. The blend of Olor & Cuban-seed Piloto Cubano and choice Indonesian wrapper give this cigar a medium-bodied intensity, while a three-country blend of Dominican, Nicaraguan and Peruvian tobaccos provides additionally superb complexity. Look for pleasant tobacco flavors with a mix of sweetened spices and light pepper. Expect minor notes of clove and a tremendous ash that will grow to over an inch before letting go. We suggest smoking this earlier in the day with a hearty German Helles Lager, as Herman Upmann himself might have.
Handmade by the Oliva family in Esteli, Nicaragua, Sol Cubano pays homage to the natives of San Salvador and the traditions and methods they practiced centuries before our time. The name means "Cuban Sun", and is representative of pure strain tobaccos grown in optimum climates and cigars made with the highest level of care and craftsmanship evoking the roots that this industry are embedded in. Distinguished from their Maduro line, the Connecticut blend utilizes choice Connecticut shade wrappers from the Connecticut River Valley, where a combination of good soil, ample rain and sunshine create some of the world's most sought after wrapper tobaccos. These silky smooth leaves ensconce a rich blend of smooth, hearty Nicaraguan long-filler tobaccos that have been patiently aged and expertly blended to ensure a mature, well-balanced smoke. Look for robust notes of black pepper & spice, aged leather, a slight creaminess, and a bold cedary finish. Nicely complemented by a peppery, lightly chilled Añejo Tequila.Discounted Box Re-Orders!
