Cedar Fresh Maduro Corona

Cedar Fresh Maduro CoronaNestor Placentia, proprietor of one of the world’s largest cigars factories, is responsible for many cigar gems, and this unique cigar is another example of his brands’ high quality craftsmanship. Extensively aged on cedar and wrapped with a cedar sheath for extra protection and aroma-retention, the bouquet on this cigar is, as you may have guessed from the name, unmistakably cedary. This beautiful corona is a darker shade of maduro—the kind that our panel goes nuts for. Unlit and while smoked, expect notes of not only cedar, but also a clove-like sweetness that sits quite nicely atop the well-aged, very mellow tobacco flavors. The draw begins a bit tight but eases up about 1/3rd through the cigar. Mellow for sure, this cigar still manages to nip at the lips and tongue with a moderate spiciness. Look for a long-lasting and pleasant cedar & clove blend at the finish. A well made Añejo tequila will have creamy, woody & peppery notes that will marry perfectly with this cigar’s flavor profile. Our panel partnered the Cedar Fresh with a 3 year old Cava Antigua 100% Agave Añejo Tequila.

El Rico Habano Corona Suprema Toro

El Rico Habano Corona Suprema ToroIf your first thought was, “La Gloria Cubana,” you’d have been close. The El Rico Habano by La Gloria Habano is the lesser known, but even fuller-flavored, stronger blend made by Ernesto Carillo of La Gloria Cubana fame. Made in Santiago, Dominican Republic, this line of cigars is among the most robust premiums on the market and closely resembles those Cuban-made beauties in appearance and flavor. The secret is the full-bodied blend of Nicaraguan long-leaf fillers and binder. This toro is wrapped in a Connecticut grown, reddish-brown, Colorado-hued wrapper, which helps provide this smoke with its full, yet surprisingly smooth, flavor. We found this cigar to offer rich, earthy flavors and hints of leather and wood. Rated an ‘89’ by Cigar Aficionado’s Insider, we truly enjoyed this cigar, and know you will too (but best wait until you’ve filled your belly with a good meal before sitting down to this one). Great with a serious Barley wine; might we suggest three of our favorites? The Stone Brewing Company’s Old Guardian Barley Wine, Great Divide B.C.’s Old Ruffian, or Victory B.C.’s Old Horizontal. All greats in their own right, they’re only enhanced when enjoyed with a cigar of this caliber.

Onyx Reserve Mini Belicoso

Onyx Reserve Mini BelicosoA square-pressed black stallion of a stogie, the Onyx Reserve line is as flavorful as it is dark. Rated a stunning ‘94’ by Cigar Aficionado, this is a rich, full-bodied cigar wrapped with a blackened Connecticut Broadleaf maduro wrapper encasing a combination of Dominican, Nicaraguan and exotic Peruvian long-leaf fillers, all tethered together by a Nicaraguan binder. Produced by Altadis USA, owner of many an enviable cigar line, this cigar is another one to add to your “must have” list. This industry giant’s production facilities form a global network and can be found in Honduras, Puerto Rico, Pennsylvania, Virginia, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Brazil and Holland. Leaf supplies are obtained from growers in every part of the world. The company also grows some of its own tobacco in Honduras and Connecticut. Yet unlike some of the corporate giants we’ve grown to dislike in the gourmet trade industry, Altadis continues to deliver hand-crafted super premium cigars. Case-in-point: Onyx. Look for earthy notes, mild spiciness and a moderate pepperiness at the back of the throat. Undeniably aged in cedar, woodsy flavors are unmistakable. Aniversario Pampero rum, a robust porter or dry stout will each suit this cigar nicely in their own unique fashions. Cheers!

Petrus Dominicana Churchill

Felipe Gregorio, maker of many a fine cigar, created a near revolution with his 1996 release of the Honduran Petrus line. Lesser known but gaining notoriety as a solid premium cigar is the Dominican incarnation of the Petrus line. Cigar Aficionado rated it a ‘90’ calling it “a medium-bodied cigar with guts.” Crafted with Dominican Olor and Nicaraguan long fillers and a supple & spicy Cameroon wrapper, it’s a complex cigar indeed. Let’s have a look shall we? Ever so slightly box-pressed, this cigar’s Cameroon wrapper is worth a caress; notice how downy smooth it is—quite nearly like silk. We wanted as much of it as we could get, which is why we ordered up a bunch of big ‘ol Churchills for you. Expect deep earthy tones on the palate and look for notes of roasted cocoa beans, leathery impressions, a light flourish of cedar, and a particularly protracted earthy finish. This cigar will work nicely as a midday smoke with afternoon coffee, but also makes for a pleasant evening smoke with spicy food and a robust red cabernet or Shiraz.

Sauza Tres Generaciones Don Eladio Churchill

Using the same blending techniques used to create the wildly successful Kahlua and ACID cigars, Drew Estate has introduced Sauza Tres Generaciones. The long leaf Nicaraguan filler tobaccos have been cured with premium Añejo (aged) Sauza tequila, which acquires its delicate amber hue and flavor—best described as a soft blend of pepper and oak with a slight hint of butterscotch—during the three years it spends aging in oak barrels. Sauza Tequila was founded in 1873 by Don Cenobio Sauza in his hometown of Tequila Mexico. A true pioneer, he was known for his innovations in production and standards of excellence and was the first to export Tequila to the United States. His son, Don Eladio and grandson, Don Javier, later joined him in the family business. There are three cigars in the Sauza line, much like there are three varieties of tequila (Silver, Gold and Añejo), named after these three members of the first family of Tequila. Immediately note the floral and creamy bouquet of this Churchill. The Adobe Cameroon-seed wrapper is a beauty to behold, but the infusion of vintage 100% blue agave tequila imparts a super-smooth, creamy yet peppery flavor with notes of oak, vanilla, butterscotch, rose petals and a touch of champagne. Excellent with, what else, Añejo Sauza Tequila, neat or on the rocks.
