Astral PhoenixAstral Phoenix

Astral cigars are handmade in the cigar making Mecca of Danli, Honduras. This acclaimed and highly recognized brand has long been known for its mild-to-medium body and dependably high quality production. Typically these cigars feature an Ecuadorian-grown Connecticut shade wrapper which gives an elegant appearance and smooth espresso and cream flavors. In 2002, two special shapes were developed for the House of Oxford—one of them being the Phoenix. Characteristic of the line, it is a mild-to-medium bodied cigar, but it is set apart from its brethren by a slightly sweet, thick Indonesian (Cameroon) wrapper. We’ve featured this cigar in the past, but not quite this much of it. The double corona is a massive smoke that will provide you with ample smoking time to fully enjoy this tremendous cigar (plan on 75-90 minutes). Smoke volume is quite large, providing aromatic woody notes in the burn, delivered through an easygoing draw. Note the sweet earthy notes that follow cedar aromas in the opening, all brought to a close with a slightly spicy, gently sweet woody finish. Astral has been consistently highly rated in Cigar Aficionado and Smoke Magazine and we know that you're going to enjoy this well-made stogie. Overall, a great smoke that is complemented nicely with an oak-heavy chardonnay.

Perdomo Cantero Perfecto

You may have heard the term Puro before and wondered, “what exactly does that mean?” Well, here’s the answer: a puro is a cigar whose tobaccos (wrapper, binder and filler) all come from the same country. You’ll notice that most cigars have a multi-national blend of tobaccos comprising their anatomy. This is usually due to the fact that some nations have specialized in one or another portion of the cigar. Connecticut shade wrappers, for example, are a specialty of the USA. Often this leaf ensconces a blend of filler and binder from Nicaragua, Honduras, the Dominican Republic, or some combination of the three (or perhaps from other countries). But a puro takes all its leaves from the same country, and those cigar makes who produce a puro take great pride in showcasing this type of cigar. The Perdomo Cantero is a 100% Nicaraguan cigar that is normally only available to those lucky enough to participate in the on site Tabacalera Perdomo factory tour, but we managed to pull some strings to hook some up for our members. Medium-to-full-bodied, Cantero is a wonderful handmade with a rich blend of Nicaraguan tobaccos cultivated from the unspoiled black soils of Perdomo’s family farm in Esteli. The densely packed specimen we have here is finished with a caramel-hued Cuban Café leaf from the lush fields of the Jalapa Valley. Expect bold, robust flavors showcasing mild sweetness amidst the underlying peppery spice finish. Overall, a very flavorful, highly complex cigar that’s complemented by dark rum or Añejo Tequila.

K. Hansotia 101 Signature Maduro Toro

K. Hansotia 101 Signature Maduro ToroKaizad Hansotia, maker of the famed Gurkha cigar brand, introduced this limited-production line in 2004. Members of the club will instantly recognize his and the Gurkha name, as we’ve featured cigars from his virtuosic repertoire time and time again. Four years in development, the Signature 101 offers a rarely encountered eight-year-old dark, oily, Connecticut-grown maduro wrapper. If that last sentence wasn’t enough of a mouthful for you, the massive amount of flavor you’ll get from this cigar certainly will be! Medium in body, this exquisite cigar burns slowly and deliberately as it releases a truly complex profile of flavors that range from hazelnut to coffee bean to vanilla to leather and pepper. Everything about this cigar is near perfection, from the densely aromatic smoke to the moderately sweet notes supplied by a genuine Costa Rican binder (look for the manner in which these sweeter notes judiciously balance the other flavors in this delicious cigar). Gurkha has always been a top-shelf brand made with flavorful, unique blends of only the highest quality. If you have yet to be won over by one of K. Hansotia’s cigars, we have a feeling this will be the one that makes you a devoted fan. This is actually the blend that Mr. Hansotia created for himself to enjoy as his preferred, private stash (thanks for finally sharing with the rest of us!); a true cigar-maker’s cigar. Enjoy this one with a hoppy Pale Ale or Robust Porter.

Montecristo Peruvian Especial # 2 Corona

It’s the full Monte! But this time it’s from La Romana, Dominican Republic, not the UK. This is the most powerful Montecristo we’ve ever featured. Known for their smooth, mild-to-medium bodied character, this uncharacteristically heavy-bodied Dominican smoke will knock your socks off, so please, be seated, and let the cigar-smoking sermon commence. Don’t be fooled by this cigar’s small stature—it is a real honest-to-goodness powerhouse of a cigar. If there were a Bruce Lee of cigars, this would be it friends. The secret to its tremendous burst of intensity is the blend of Nicaraguan, Dominican, and most particularly Peruvian Olor long leaves. The fact that it’s draped in a beautifully dark, “so oily it’s moist” maduro Habana 2000 wrapper also contributes to the kick. The tobaccos are densely packed in this little gem of a smoke, so it may have a tighter draw than you’re used to, but this will ease in time. In fact, the slow draw is a blessing, as it slows down the delivery of bold flavors just enough to enjoy them without being overwhelmed. Be warned: these square-pressed maduros are only to be smoked after you’ve got a full belly—not the cigar to pair with your morning coffee. Expect notes of full-flavored tobacco, aged leather, earthy woodiness and an edgy, robust finish that ends with a creamy, balancing note at its finale. This is one only an XO Cognac can tame.

Punch Gran Puro Series Rancho Toro

Punch Gran Puro Series Rancho ToroHandmade in Cofradia, Honduras, this is actually our second puro of the month! 100% Honduran from head to foot. While Punch, a so-called “ancient brand”, originated in Cuba in 1840, this world famous cigar line has been handmade in Honduras since 1969 from Cuban-seed tobaccos. The Honduran handmades that made them famous were mellowed by the inclusion of Dominican tobaccos in their blend of Honduran and Nicaraguan leaves. The Punch Gran Puro is a bold step up from the regular Punch line, yet it manages to deliver a smoother, somehow more delicate taste. Make no mistake, however, it’s a powerful cigar. The bold recipe features a spicy Havana-seed sun-grown wrapper, along with a sun-grown binder. Together, they do in fact provide quite a “punch”, but in a strictly non-abrasive manner. Expect a firm white ash to cap the extensively aged tobaccos as they burn, and look for notes of spice that are difficult to capture in words—less of a pepperiness than a Caribbean style bite, if you will—with a hint of natural cinnamon, a product of the unique soil of the San Agustin Valley. The finish is particularly long-lasting and pleasant. A great cigar to enjoy toward the end of a hearty meal such as a porterhouse steak or a beef stew.
