Member of the Month
Well, no member of the month photo to print this month guess no one out there wants a FREE variety pack of 25 premium smokes? When this happens it always astounds us but alas, we'll just have to smoke these babies ourselves which is fine by us, but if in the future anyone out there wises up and it hits them, wait, all I have to do is e-mail a photo of me smoking my prized cigars, with a few words describing the scene, and I get 25 free smokes? Hang on, that's about a $125 value!? What the heck have I been waiting for?, then you know what to do
Without a member photo to take up space here, we can take a few lines to point out that this month's picks aren't dominated by the mighty Dominican Republic. While cigars from this country have a tendency to take up quite a few spots on our monthly lists (and for good reason), this month we've intentionally opted to feature a few more smokes from other regions, including of course, Honduras, Nicaragua and Mexico. This particular batch of smokes showcases a very interesting variety of styles and flavors we hope you enjoy them all!
SUBMIT YOURSELF OR YOUR GROUP PHOTO FOR CONSIDERATION! And if you're selected, we'll send you a variety pack of 25 hand rolled smokes from past selections! Get your submissions in now before everyone else does or you gotta wait 3 months to see your pretty mug adorning the front page! Send your photos and letter to: Cigar of the Month Club Attn: Member of the Month, PO Box 1627, Lake Forest, CA 92609 or email your photo and letter to customerservice@cigarmonthclub.com

Carlos Toraño 1916 Cameroon Robusto

An exceptionally attractive smoke, right down to the label! Appearance really is a big part of the allure of a cigar, and it's great to see a beautiful specimen like this, complete with a majestic label design with a color palette that so wonderfully complements the natural hues of the cigar itself. But that is just what you can expect from Carlos Toraño cigars every time. This beauty, a completely new blend, was made to commemorate the Toraño family's entry into the tobacco business. Featuring a gorgeous genuine Cameroon wrapper that has been aged for several years, Havana-seed Nicaraguan binder, and a very hearty blend of Nicaraguan and Honduran long fillers, the 1916 is a consistent winner. This is a very cool burning cigar that offers a full-bodied cascade
of flavors. Right off the bat, expect a supercharged burst of spice and black pepper which will quickly mellow, balanced by hints of sweet spice, and finishing with notes of nut, cedar and other woody elements, along with a small touch of coconut. Fine Kentucky bourbon will bring out and match the more brazen qualities of this stogie.
Cupido Classic Campana Figurado
Ahh the Jalapa Valley, home to some of the most nurturing tobacco soil the world has ever known, is also home to the Cupido family of cigar makers. Not surprisingly, given the fortitude of this area's cigar making reputation, they have taken pride in creating what can only be described as the best hand made cigar in Nicaragua. Their secrets of curing and farming premium tobacco have been passed down from generation to generation. Their Classic' line of cigars features aged Ligero long-leaf filler and binder covered in an extremely attractive Sumatran wrapper. The Cupido's wrapper, long filler, and binder were all cultivated in Esteli, Nicaragua, giving it true character, with a balanced flavor that never strays from pleasant. This medium-to-full-bodied cigar is smooth with mild notes of peppery spiciness and earthy undertones. Voted "Boutique Brand of the Year" in both 1999 and 2000
(an unusual accomplishment to come home with the accolade 2 years in a row), and quite impressive to our own panel. It has a spicy aroma and smoked cool until the last billowy puff. An ultra-cooled peppermint schnapps will contribute an amazing kick to this fine cigar, though a malty Scottish ale would also be appropriate.
Fire Double Corona by Nestor Plasencia
Fire was recently released by the impeccable Indian Tabac Cigar Company. It offers a rare concoction of triple-fermented wrappers and fillers that boast a most impressive flavor profile. This combination of dark tobaccos yields a full-bodied Cuban-esque impression on the palate, featuring stimulating flavor and a savory, stirring and slightly sweet character. Combining Indian Tabac's attention to detail and Nestor Plasencia's cigar making prowess, this is one fire that you won't ever want to put out! Immediately note the deeply dark colored wrapper and flawless construction. Don't let it's slender, smaller-stature build throw you, this beauty packs a punch of hefty tobacco flavors, with softer notes of leather and sweet cedar. Expect a robust spiciness to linger through the long-lasting finish. Also in contrast to its size is the volume of smoke it yields, indicating to those around it that
this cigar has more waiting inside that may be expected. Enjoy with a full-bodied XO cognac or a hearty Barley Wine Ale.
K. Hansotia worked in conjunction with the Toraño family to produce this eye-catching stogie (and we already know what fine smokes these folks put out). They feature dark Honduran wrappers and stunningly vibrant artwork upon their labels. Look for a rich flavor accentuated with a hint of spices and coffee. We have to agree with Cigar Aficionado's review of this cigar; as they put it, This rich brown cigar burns evenly, with a fine draw. It's elegant and balanced with notes of sweet spice, and a long, leathery finish. Smooth. An interesting additional note, some panel members reported notes of black cherry flavor midway through the cigar, and recommended smoking this cigar with the following drink (recipe included): mix 1 part Absolut Kurant, 1 part sweet vermouth, and 1 part dry vermouth, over ice, with a splash of grenadine. Submerge an orange wedge in the beverage and garnish
with a pair of black cherries (some folks call variations of this drink the Eastwindyou'll call it a great match to this premium Toro).

The Perdomo Reserve line is among Nick Perdomo's finest achievements. Blended with Nicaraguan long-fillers, and covered in a most attractive silky wrapper, this aged beauty is matured over three times the usual duration. Ecuadorian Rosado wrappers appear on the natural, Nicaraguan Maduro leaf on the maduros, and on the new Cameroon line there's a genuine African-grown wrapper. Note the wonderfully ruddy wrapper on the beauty you've received with reddish highlights reminiscent of the brilliantly colored geology of the New Mexican desert this rustic gem is almost as enjoyable to behold as it is to smoke! An especially user-friendly feature on this cigar is the shape; with its narrow foot, it is particularly easy to get an even light. We found the flavor exceptionally rich with hints of spice and a slight chocolaty taste.
This box-pressed figurado finishes with earthy, sweet flavors that are superbly interspersed with notes of cedar. Pour yourself a hoppy porter, such as Sierra Nevada's version, and prepare to sing the praises of both the cigar and the beer!
Ask Murl
Hey Murl,
I'm another newbie to the club, so I was wondering, what is meant by the term Corojo? I know it refers to the wrapper leaf, but can you provide a more detailed explanation for me good buddy? Thanks big dawg!

Yo Little Richard!
I'd have done more to mess around with your last name, but I really don't know how to pronounce the sucker so you've escaped the wry wit of the Murl dog (or dawg if you like, which you do). So on to your question then and an appropriately-timed question it is as we've featured quite a few Corojo smokes in the past few months. Corojo (pronounced: kawr-oh-ho) is the name given to a specific variety of tobacco plant that was originally developed in the Vuelta Abajo Valley in Cuba. It is named after the El Corojo Vega plantation that first grew it. Their unique combination of soil mineral content, irrigation, drainage, and exposure allowed this temperamental, delicate plant to thrive. Most attempts to relocate the seeds to other tobacco growing regions either in Cuba or other Caribbean nations continue to be met with failureit tends to survive only when planted in the valley of its origin. Within the last 5 or 6 years, however, there have been two growers, both in a valley in Bonao, Dominican Republic, who have been able to harvest successful crops of Corojo. It seems that the characteristics of this valley duplicate those of the original Cuban plantation. The wrappers supplied by this plant are often, but not always, designated as "rosado" shade, which is a very rare, reddish tint. The leaf's thin, oily texture, along with its small thin veins, make it the ultimate choice for a wrapper leaf often used only for the highest rated Cuban brands. Its rarity and finicky growing nature not to mention phenomenal contributions to cigar flavor have made it exceptionally sought after. So relish it baby it's rare, vintage material, much like myself
Woof!
