CAO Extreme

Developed to honor the 30th anniversary of the CAO brand (1968-1998), the "eXtreme" completes the L'Anniversaire series trilogy, which also includes the exceptional Maduro and Cameroon lines. The eXtreme is very full-bodied and strong, rolled with a fine Ecuadorian Sumatra seed wrapper, 5 leaf Nicaraguan blend, including 2 types of ligero leaf, and a Nicaraguan binder. It has quickly become one of the most sought after premium cigars on the market today. The beautiful Belicoso featured this month smokes like a dream. Even before lighting, you can sniff out notes of chocolate, pepper, and of course, tobacco. Lit, expect the best: a fulfilling draw that offers huge, thick billows of smoke, and a complex blend of aged spice, black pepper, chocolate, nuts and robust tobacco flavors that mix with genuine finesse. Note an even burn and a stunning, long-holding ash that is top notch, dare we say, ideal in appearance. In the finish, look for notes of spice and aged leather along with a full tobacco flavor that is brawny, yet somehow mellow. This is a truly world class cigar that is most impressive to smoke, and to behold. You might want to try smoking it with a full-bodied, dry roasted stout or a smoky single malt scotch. Of course, while not often mentioned as a traditional alcohol accompaniment, a 100% blue agave, peppery tequila sings in perfect harmony with the complex flavors of this cigar.

El Mejor Maduro
"El Mejor," translates to "the best" in Spanish, and you'll soon see that this cigar is indeed worthy of the name. A completely Nicaraguan breed, all the leaves used in the construction hale from Nicaragua, including Cuban Habano-seed Nicaraguan filler & binders and Nicaraguan wrapper leaves, and it is hand rolled in Nicaragua as well. The box-pressed El Mejor is a rich & robust cigar packed with flavor-an exceptional, slow-burning, beautiful maduro. An additional complement to renowned lines such as Savinelli Nicaraguan Reserve, 5 Vegas, and Cupido, Master roller Don "Kiki" Berger of the Tabacalera Esteli factory, has rolled another winner. Expect a smooth, earthy flavor with strong notes of chocolate and slightly sweetened tobacco, a characteristic of the well-nourished leaves that grow in the pitch black soil of Don Kiki's farms in Esteli, Nicaragua. The sleek, dark maduro wrapper gives off flavors of black pepper, which offset the sweeter notes in a manner that contributes to this cigar's complexity. Well constructed with a firm, but not tight draw, this cigar should keep a smile on your face for a good 45 minutes to an hour. Consider trying this with Courvoisier XO Cognac for a rewarding flavor combination.

Felipe Gregario Fat Boy

Life moves fast, and sometimes you've got less time than you'd like. So, you've got to be creative and find shortcuts to stay ahead. And that's a big part of the appeal of the Felipe Gregorio Fat Boy. Originally created for shop owners and merchants as a sampler smoke, the line was a huge, unintended hit! These attractive Rothschilds are only 3.5 inches long, offering the finest flavor of any Churchill, in a smoke that you can enjoy in 20 minutes. But their attractiveness is not limited to the convenience they provide-they deliver terrific flavor as well. While you can experience them in a rush, they were by no means produced in a hurry. Created over time with fine aged tobaccos, the makers of the Felipe Gregorio cigars have put in the time so that you don't have to. Note the excellent construction-seamless and smooth with the perfect amount of oil in the wrapper. This Rothschild draws effortlessly, and despite its smaller stature, it delivers huge billows of aromatic smoke. A mild-to-medium-bodied smoke, it is loaded with peppery, oaken notes. Expect a finish that is spicy and woody, with a subtle nuttiness. This satisfying cigar is mellow, but has a presence to rival any larger cigar you'll find. Enjoy on the run with your morning cup of coffee, or take your time with it and an aged, XO cognac of your choice.

Indian Tabac Deluxe Tubo

We just can't say enough about the Indian Tabac Cigar Company. As a company, they have grown at an astonishing rate in a very short period of time. And as a producer of premium cigars, they have been among the most consistent in the world market, with a multitude of smokes, each featuring absolutely brilliant quality and superb flavor. This month, we proudly bring you another of their many fine lines that exemplifies their prowess and prestige. The Deluxe Tubo features exquisite Cameroon and Brazilian maduro leaves, meticulously wrapped around the finest Dominican Republic tobacco. This Churchill displays an oily sheen, dark wrapper, and supple push. As soon as you remove it from its handsome casing, notice the burst of cedar and pine aromas, and you can expect these natural unlit aromas to enhance the complexity of this smoke as they contribute to the overall flavor. We found the draw to be impeccable, offering up a very earthy, woody taste. Mild spice mingles with lightly sweetened clove and a mild tobacco flavor. Expect the flavor to build to a rich creaminess over time, giving this cigar an additionally complex profile. The firm white ash held on to an astonishing 2 full inches, impressing everyone on our panel. A mild and tasty cigar that is extraordinary and unique. Find and pair with Appleton Estate Distilled 21-year-old Rum (or a similar well-aged dark rum) un-chilled and straight up.

La Gloria Cubana Maduro
La Gloria Cubana cigars are typically medium-bodied, but this beautiful maduro has an extra kick. It is this variety in intensity and flavor that characterizes this fine line. El Credito Cigars owner, Ernesto Perez-Carrillo, moved primary production from his Miami factory to the Dominican Republic in 1997. The move nearly quintupled their production capabilities and helped to keep up with their steadily swelling demand. La Gloria Cubanas provide an exquisitely varied blend of Brazilian, Dominica, Mexican and Nicaraguan long filler. With so many tobaccos, it's no surprise that this is a fairly dense cigar, encased in an oily smooth deep dark Ecuadorian wrapper. The result is a richer, spicier, fuller bodied version of the regular La Gloria Cubana line. Our panel loved this cigar, and you will too. Note the excellent construction-flawless. Expect tons flavor that is spicy yet very smooth, with notes of what could be described as a sweetened cedar. The draw is excellent for such a densely packed beauty, delivering strong tobacco aromas and flavors all the way down to the nub. This cigar gives a plentiful smoke volume and its full-bodied presence will leave you with a great earthy finish full of enduring spice, with a trace of sweetness. Full, rich, creamy and strong, La Gloria Cubana has scored as high as '91' in Cigar Aficionado blind taste tests. Great with Irish Coffee or a full-flavored whiskey.

ASK MURL

Hey Murl,

I know some people store their cigars in the freezer-is this a good money saving option as opposed to buying a high-end humidor? I'm not cheap Murl, it's just that, well, nothing wrong with saving a few bucks, right?

Nicholas Petrino
Hoboken, NJ

Hey Nicky P,

Nah man, nothin' wrong with that-that is if you're cool with losing money in the long run by buying great cigars, then not getting all that they have to offer if they'd been cared for properly. Sure, this frozen stogie thing is an option that many people practice, but not one that I'd recommend, and it ain't just because I have a tough time getting' into the freezer mind you. Think about this for a moment-there's a reason cigars came to be grown in tropical areas and not the frozen tundras of Siberia-tobacco don't like the cold! And even though the tobacco in your cigars is no longer a living plant, tobacco does continue to age in premium cigars. In fact, many cigars carry a higher price tag depending on how long they've been aged in their boxes. And guess what, when you toss those fine stogies in the freezer, their natural aging is abruptly halted. Not to mention the potential that freezer odors can easily be absorbed by your cigars, and trust me, a fine smoke shouldn't taste like frozen broccoli and lamb shank. But, if you insist on using this method, then heed this advice: you must allow the cigars to return to normal temperature slowly. If you light them too soon, the abrupt change in temperature may cause them to crack open or explode. Give chilled cigars at least two or three days at the proper temperature in a humidified environment before lighting them up. But Nick, check it out man, humidors have really come down in price, so if you're really getting in to cigar smoking, you ought to pick one up. And if it's money you're interested in, trust me, it'll save you a bundle in the long run!

Woof!
