Paul Steeves Tail Gates Phrog Style!
Hello
everyone at C&H clubs,
My name is Paul Steeves. I'm a new member, thanks to my wonderful girlfriend Victoria!
This is me enjoying a (Cuban) Hoyo De Monterey Cabinet series while deployed to Iraq. That after noon we were just chillin in Al Kut Tail gating Phrog style!
I'm a Ch-46 Echo Sea Knight (Affectionately known as a Phrog) Crew chief. Stationed at Camp Pendleton, Ca with Marine HMM-364 "World Famous Purple Foxes"
I wish I had been a member of your club then too. It was kind of difficult to get good smokes over there. The Kuwaitis usually had a pretty good supply of cubans, so I'd stock up when I was down south. Once in a while during my travels through Iraq we would come across a stash of Cubans belonging to some former Iraqi government officials. Well I couldn't just let them go to waste now could I!!
They were usually pretty dried out so I would have to re constitute them in my ghetto style humidor made out of an empty .50 cal ammo can and a sponge glued to the inside of the lid.
I must say it worked pretty well!!
Anyway, I just wanted to say Hello and let you guy know how great your cigar selections are!!
Thank you, and Semper Fidelis!
Sincerely.
Paul S. Steeves

The Astral line is handmade in the cigar making Mecca of Danli, Honduras. This is an acclaimed and highly recognized brand, known for its mild-to-medium body and consistently high quality production. The Ecuadorian-grown Connecticut shade wrapper gives the Phoenix featured this month an elegant appearance while well-aged, top-notch tobaccos come together just as elegantly with silky espresso and cream flavors. We found this Churchill to have a good draw, a perfect burn, and plenty of smoke volume. Look for a pleasant cedar aroma, followed by a somewhat sweet earthy character that finishes with a slightly spicy, woody impression. Astral has been consistently highly rated in Cigar Aficionado and Smoke Magazine and we know that you're going to enjoy this well-made cigar. Overall, a great smoke that is complemented nicely with an oak-heavy chardonnay.
Legendary cigar maker Manuel Quesada has been in the cigar business his entire life. In Cuba, the Quesada family worked as leaf brokers for everything from cigarette tobacco to cigars, and one of the major exporters of Cuban tobacco to the world market. When they were forced into exile in 1960, they transferred their entire business to the Dominican Republic, where they had been buying and selling tobacco for years. It didn't take long before they began manufacturing cigars. In addition to the lovely Maduro featured this month, Manuel also manufactures several other highly regarded brands including Licenciados, Cubita, Romeo y Julieta, Jose Benito, Royal Dominicana brands, Casa Blanca, and Credo. With this, the deepest, darkest of this month's lot, you experience his mastery first hand. Note the expert construction: a glisteningly smooth Connecticut shade wrapper and perfect push in this mild Dominican beauty. This is a dense but not over-packed cigar of high caliber. Immediately note a sweet flavor on the lips even before lighting and look for a dry, woody character, with hints of coffee and spice, and subtle notes of lemon-like flavors. Expect a very pleasant woody aroma and non-lingering dry finish. A fuller bodied smoke than most of Cu-Avana's very mild lines. A perfect accompaniment to a single-malt scotch on the rocks.
Macanudo
Jamaican Duke of Devon
Well before the Cuban cigar-maker exodus that ensued upon Castro's takeover, there was another, lesser known tobacco cultivator's emigration. Back in 1868, a few Cuban cigar makers had moved to Jamaica with hopes of creating a cigar that would appeal to the distinguished British market. In this environment of entrepreneurial spirit, Macanudo was born. The fine heritage of Cuban cigars, hot Caribbean sun and warm sea breezes fashioned the perfect environment to produce the first of today's top selling US cigar. Due to prohibitive economic conditions that exist today in Jamaica, Macanudo is currently only made in the Dominican Republic. But through some searching and some, well, maybe under-the-table dealings, we procured a stash of Jamaicans-among the last of their kind. We found these special stogies to be marvelously constructed-evinced by their appearance and superb draw. Mellowed from extensive aging, these unimposing cigars still offer a somewhat unexpected robustness. The experience of smoking these Macanudos was wonderfully relaxing, presenting a satisfying flavor profile that was lightly punctuated at times with notes of clove and candy-like sweetness. Expect the taste to be rounded out with a light lingering peppery nip on the tongue. Mild with a distinct creaminess, the Macanudo Jamaican is a versatile smoke great for any time of day and complemented by various indulgences from morning coffee to a full tawny port.
Natural
by Drew Estates - Pimp Stick
The boys at Drew Estate have caused quite a stir in the cigar industry in the last few years. With the release of a multitude of unique brands, they're quickly becoming known for producing high quality, premium smokes that come with shapes and names as unusual and creative as the blends themselves! How could we resist a smoke brave enough to call itself The Pimp Stick! The name may be funny, but this smoke was rolled by someone that takes their craft quite seriously. We loved the soft, oily wrapper and found the Pimp Stick to offer an incredibly distinct, pleasant aroma and flavor. With a rewarding draw, perfect smoke volume and its great blend of light spice and smooth tobacco flavor, this cigar is certainly no novelty item. It's blended with a number of unique Dutch tobaccos, long filler from the black soil of Esteli, Nicaragua, and dressed in a gorgeous, rare Cameroon wrapper. The Pimp Stick is definitely an exotic and complex blend of tobaccos and flavors. You can expect an incredibly rich, smooth smoke that bursts with a big bouquet of flavors and a finish of aromatic cedar and leathery tobacco. Great with a hoppy India Pale Ale or perhaps while sippin' on gin & juice with your mind on your money and your money on your mind.
Regalos cigars are handmade in Honduras using a blend of all Cuban-seed tobaccos grown in the Dominican Republic, the most mountainous regions of Honduras, and in the Jalapa region of Nicaragua. This line of cigars has received high marks and is recommended by both Cigar Aficionado and Smoke magazines. We just love the shape of this one, listed as a Torpedo but perhaps better described as a Pyramide, it gives a large burn area and a very manageable head. This type of construction has the effect of funneling down the draw, delivering a powerful puff through its masterful design, and often making the cigar seem a bit stronger than it really is. This shape also makes for an ever evolving flavor experience as the relative amount of filtering and burning tobacco is constantly changing during the burn. We found that this one offered a very complex, flavorful, and thoroughly enjoyable smoking session. Look for a smooth buttery wrapper with an appealing oily sheen in this very well-constructed cigar. Expect a smooth and mellow start with a steady build toward loads of spicy, full flavor. Overall this is a cigar that goes a touch beyond medium-bodied, but not enough to scare off fans of a milder smoke. In fact, if you're looking to step up to a moderate- to full-bodied smoke, this is a great one to try. Consider smoking it with a Strong ale or an authentic Belgian Trappiste Tripel Abbey Ale.
