Master cigar producer
Hendrik Kelner, composer Avo Uvezian and the world renown Davidoff
company have come together to produce one of the most prestigious
brands on the market. Kelners superior cigar making skills,
Davidoffs esteemed reputation, and Uvezians quest for
perfection in a cigar have jointly led to the cre-ation of this
premium smoke. Avos are beautifully constructed from the very finest
premium leaves, including a silky Connecticut shade wrapper and
Dominican filler leaves. The result is a cigar whose quality is
apparent right from the get go. Immediately note the excellent construction
, perfectly rolled and appropriately dense. Expect a medium- bodied
cigar with a fair amount of spice to it. The spice is gently tamed
by a soft creami-ness, making this a fairly complex smoke with a
bit of bite, yet with the feel of a milder stogie. Try it with your
favorite micro-brewed India Pale Ale.
Colorado by Don Lino
is specifically designed for those who seek a satisfying, full-bodied
smoke. It is hand-rolled in the Augusto Reyes factory in the Dominican
Republic, constructed with 3 year-old Dominican long-filler and
binders, and aged extensively. An additional 6 months of aging after
boxing allows the Colorado to further evolve into a most desirable
cigar. Wrapped in an attractive reddish-brown Colorado wrapper,
hence the name, this medium-bodied cigar is sure to satisfy. Our
panel found that it presented a pleasing mix of flavors, with notes
of robust cedar, leather, and a touch of soft pine. The aftertaste
is equally complex, leaving behind an airy, long-lasting earthy
and leathery sweetness. At various points during your smoking experience,
note how the character of this cigars flavor profile continues
to change. Bottom line, this cigar gets better with every draw.
Enjoy it with an English Extra Special Bitter ale or a lightly chilled
cognac.
Horsepower by Nestor Plasencia
The boldest of our features
this month comes from the guys at Indian Tabac. Their popular Horsepower
line capitalizes on the desire of many smokers to have the same
cigar in varying degrees of intensity. Horsepower features five
different quality long-filler blends, strength-rated in auto-mobile
fashion of 150, 250, 350, 450 HP on up to Turbo, the highest caliber
in the line which offers a spicy full-bodied blaze of a smoke. Our
first impression of this cigar was that it has some power under
the hood; very sleek, fine leather interior, er, we mean texture,
and a prominent scent of spice coming off of it. The first few draws
are smooth yet intense, as the Turbo peels out and accelerates to
top speed. Expect flavorful spice to cut and swerve through the
other tobaccos flavorsthis is the stronger Nicaraguan filler
taking the lead as the major player in a rich an intricate blend
of tobaccos. We found this cigar offered full, complex tobacco flavor
without the abrasive spice that many others of similar strength
deliver. The Turbo will stay in the race for the long haul, offering
at least an hour of powerfully pleasant smoking satisfaction. While
we never encourage drinking and driving, this hotrod should be piloted
with an XO Cognac, single malt Scotch or, dare we suggest, a high-octane
whiskey on the rocks.
Nat Sherman cigars have
a rich history, first hitting the market during the height of the
Great Depression and catering to the likes of fashion execu-tives,
show business stars and of course, gangsters. His family business,
now it its third generation, is still busy creating some of the
finest cigars on the market, including this smooth, mild Metropolitan
corona. Made by hand from all long-fillers, including Dominican
and Honduran leaves and topped off with very oily Connecticut shade
wrapper, Nat Shermans are a pleasure to look at, and of course,
to smoke. Not all of our panel members are big fans of milder cigars,
but everyone was taken by this delicious specimen: super-smooth,
mild-tasting with just the slightest hint of sweetness on the palateall
delivered via a smooth, supple draw. This is a very low maintenance
smoke that yields a firm white ash and billows of relaxing smoke.
Makes for a great morning lift; pair it with the paper and a cup
of coffee.
Ask any tobacconist and
theyll tell you that finding a well made Piramide with a good
draw is quite rare; the Puros Indios weve sent you is among
the rarest. This cigar is extremely difficult to make because the
filler leaves must be deftly rolled to avoid constricting the draw
at the head you can be certain that this Piramide was made
by the most experienced rollers in Honduras. Puros Indios are handmade
with Cuba-seed filler and a sultry cuadorian maduro wrapper thats
been naturally fermented. Theyre considered very rare because
they include a mavericks blend of Brazilian, Dominican and
Jamaican leaves that has undergone a very protracted period of aging.
Rolled in 1998, the Special-Aged Piramides are mellowed by time;
the additional 6 years of aging has a taming effect on the otherwise
very intense tobacco tastes. Immediately note the tremendous burning
area, contrasted by a very manageable head the very reason
for the evolution of this shape of cigar. We found perfection in
the draw full of complex flavors amidst an exquisitely tempered
blend of tobacco. Look for notes of mild roasted coffee with minor
cocoa highlights and expect a gargantuan ash that youll have
to fight to knock off, even at a full inch. Dont be fooled
by the mellow nature of this cigar, the intensity builds and just
might sneak up on you. This is quite simply, a marvelous premium
smoke, and one you won't soon forget. Consider pairing with a hoppy
India Pale Ale or your preferred full-bodied bourbon.
