Colorado Flyboy Scotty McFadden Takes Pat
for a Spin!
"My dog Pat and I are getting ready to go for a flight in the helicopter while I enjoy a Churchill."
Scotty McFadden
Loveland, CO
While Scotty's letter above was certainly on the cusp of being a bit too short to qualify for the honor of "Member of the Month", he's one of our favorite customers and has been with us as long as we can remember so the board met, voted & decided we'd cut him some slack on his lackluster update! Well, he did have to take a picture and email it to us after all. There was some effort there. Scotty, we want to hear more about what's going on out your way and how much you missed us at the CO Brewer's Festival this year so pick up the phone and give us a ring!
SUBMIT YOURSELF OR YOUR GROUP PHOTO FOR CONSIDERATION! And if you're selected, we'll send you a variety pack of 25 hand rolled smokes from past selections! Get your submissions in now before everyone else does or you gotta wait 3 months to see your pretty mug adorning the front page! Send your photos and letter to: Cigar of the Month Club Attn: Member of the Month, PO Box 1627, Lake Forest, CA 92609 or email your photo and letter to customerservice@cigarmonthclub.com

Featured Cigars
We have the legendary Jose Dominguez to
thank for this particularly dark, strikingly gorgeous cigar. The
nearly black double maduro Oscuro wrapper offers not only aesthetic
appeal, but smooth taste and mild body. Certainly though, the flavor
of this hand-rolled, Cuban style, box-pressed beauty is not only
from the wrapper; the premium blend of Nicaraguan long-filler leaves
deserves credit as well. Have a look down the foot of this cigar
and you'll notice the best of both worlds: densely packed
at the edges, with plenty of breathing room through the center.
This packing method results in a moderately dense cigar with an
easy draw quality and a billowy smoke volume. We found the pre-burn
aroma to be earthy with notes of clove-like sweetness, which persisted
while lit, but took a backseat to a mild spiciness. The spice subsided
with time and gave way to an ultra smooth buttery flavor. The overall
feel from this cigar is smooth and relaxing in nature. The draw
is about as perfect as it gets, even and nearly effortless. Expect
a moderate body and a slightly peppery finish. We don't have
to point out the billowy smoke volumeyou can't miss
itbut we are giving you a little pre-smoke warning: coupled
with its slow burning character, this one's going to fill
the room. We paired this deep dark specimen with a round of even
darker extra-stout Guinness, but a slightly chilled glass of Maker's
Mark whiskey would partner nicely as well.
Another Dominican favorite of ours, this Maduro is an extension
to the widely acclaimed La Aurora line. This cigar comes from the
oldest factory in the Dominican Republic and as one might expect,
has been constructed by the ablest of hands from the finest long-leaf
fillers and wrappers. This stick is pretty firm between the fingers
with just the right amount of push we expect in a high-end cigar.
Moderate to light weight and nicely balanced, this cigar feels perfect
in the hand and presents a classic appearance. The lightly oily
wrapper is a flavorful Connecticut broadleaf maduro that has been
naturally-fermented with care. We found the burn to be exceptionally
even, the draw clean and the smoke volume moderate and pleasantly
aromatic. Look for hints of cedar in the aroma, becoming more prominent
during the second half of the burn, coinciding with the complex
yet subtle flavor profile. Note the moderate to full body as it
intensifies through each draw all the way down to the nub. Do yourself
a favor and get your hands on a Barley Wine-Style Ale for an ideal
liquid counterpart.
No less than six generations of tobacco cultivating experience
went in to the development
of our next selection. Leon Jimines continues the legacy started
in 1903 when Don Eduardo Leon Jimines founded La Aurora Cigars in
the Cibao Valley on the outskirts of Santiago, Dominican Republic.
We found the construction impeccable and the taste satisfying. Before
lighting her up, take in the notes of candy-like sweetness coming
off the light-tone natural Connecticut shade leaf wrapper. Expect
an unassuming, elegant cigar that burns slow and even. The smoke
volume is moderate, and seemed to go almost dormant between drags,
though it stayed lit and burned solidly. Look for a very mild, almost
creamy tobacco taste and a very smooth smoking experience. We picked
up notes of woody chocolate as well as toasted caramel. Note the
solid, very white ash that hangs on and on– a sure indication
of well-aged tobaccos. Overall this Robusto showcases properly balanced
construction with a superior blend of milder Dominican tobaccos.
It would pair up nicely with a medium-bodied malty ale, cognac,
or blended scotch. The choice is yours!
Repeat offenders, that's what we call Rocky Patel and Nestor
Plasencia, owners of The Indian Tabac Cigar Company. I.T. has appeared
in our club repeatedly as they continually impress us with their
ever-evolving cigar lines. They have received repeated praise from
the folks at Cigar Aficionado, SMOKE magazine, and elsewhere. Indian
Tabac is one of the hottest and genuinely fine cigar brands to emerge
on the cigar scene in the past 10 years. Just a matter of months
ago they reintroduced the Puck, breathing life back into a long-dormant
Cuban classic. Mellow Dominican and plenty of rich Honduran leaves
comprise the long-filler blend waiting for you inside this Toro.
The construction is flawless, wrapped in a flavorful sun-grown,
medium-tone, natural shade leaf. We found this cigar to be admirably
palatable, with a medium body. Note the toasty, earthy flavors that
constantly shift dominance during the course of this smoke (that's
the varying strength of the Dominican and Honduran leaves playing
off one another). Some panel members reported notes of toasted,
buttered popcorn. Puck has an ash that just will not let go, holding
on like a champ! A hop-heavy India Pale Ale would be great with
this cigar.
This premium 100% long-filler, handmade cigar honors the Cuban cigar families who escaped Castro's takeover of their lands and factories in 1959. Rounding out Carlos Torano's extremely successful Exodus 1959 series is the Silver Edition. Its well-aged filler combination of Costa Rican, Honduran and Mexican tobaccos is encased in a handsome Criollo '98 wrapper. Look for a moderately oily sheen encasing a firm and substantial cigar. It burned evenly to the very end and never needed relighting. The draw was definitely even, but you'll have to work at it a bit more than the Fidelgo Negro featured above as this cigar is quite dense. We found this medium-to-full-bodied smoke notably smooth. So did Cigar Aficionado, rating it an impressive 89. Look for substantial spice in the flavor, with notes of black pepper, leather, cedar and undertones of nut in this complex smoke. We found the finish spicy and the tobacco flavor prominent. Try it with a full-bodied India Pale Ale. Don't have any you say?
