Bourbon on Bourbon Street (and a Cigar too!)
Here is a photo from a trip to New Orleans
to visit my buddy Chris (Right), Al (Left)
and myself in the middle. Nothing better than kicking back with a
good stogie and some Bourbon! One of a few places where you can still
go anywhere with a cigar. Keep the selections coming, the tube showing
up in my mailbox always puts a smile on my face!

Cohiba Maduro Box Pressed Torpedo
Considered the pinnacle of Cuban cigars, Cohiba is now also rolled in the Dominican Republic. The Cuban version was initially developed as a medium-bodied protocol cigar for presentation only by officials of the Cuban government. While the Cuban and Dominican versions are certainly different (aside from the obvious fact that one is legal and the other is not!), any lover of the leaf will enjoy both. A medium-bodied cigar with a nice dark wrapper. A little bit country, a little bit rock and roll, um, rather a little bit spicy, a little bit sweet. This exquisite smoke offers a medium-to-full-bodied flavor and a strong, smooth, and incredibly rich character. Try it with a chocolate stout or your favorite cup of coffee.
Estavan Cruz is a premium hand made cigar manufactured in the Dominican
Republic. This Maduro Robusto consists of a Con-necticut Broadleaf
wrapper, Ecuadorian binder, and long filler blend of Dominican,
Nicaraguan, and Brazilian tobaccos. It has a nice draw, with notes
of espresso, wood and bitter chocolate. There is almost a tarry
element on the palate, but there are also dark roasted cocoa bean
flavors. Great color and shine on this little fireplug of a cigar.
It draws and burns well with earthy notes, hints of bitter chocolate
and a spicy finish. We'd recommend pairing it with your favorite
Cabernet Sauvignon or dry stout.
The Free Cuba cigar line is made in the Dominican Republic by Jochy Blanco. And the Toro featured this month happens to be a very popular smoke in their line up. Note a handsome cigar, wrapped in a medium-brown, oily Connecticut Windsor shade wrapper. It offers a long-filler combination of Habano seed and Dominican Piloto Cubano long filler. We found it to be a medium-to-full-bodied smoke with hints of cocoa and sweet spice flavors on the palate with a sweet wood finish. A smoked porter or full-bodied Merlot would be the perfect match.
La Perla Habana is one of the most coveted labels in cigar historyAnd
one of our fav-orite brands to feature as we know you'll love
it too! Two of the industry's most respected entrepreneurs took
it upon themselves to recreate this well-known Cuban brand in
the Dominican Republic. Sergio Cuevas and Doug Wood have created
a cigar in which commitment, quality, and flavor are the sole concerns.
Using closely guarded techniques to age and blend the tobac-cos,
these men have produced a cigar that is worthy of the name, the
Pearl of Habana. Note a sweet woodiness with perhaps some hints
of pepper. A fairly complex flavor profile. It certainly picked up
body as you got into the smoke. Consider pairing it with a well-aged
Cabernet.
Morro Castle is the famous fort at the en-trance to the harbor
of Havana, a landmark erected in 1859 by Spaniards to act as a beacon
for friendly ships and to guard against buccaneers. Once made by
the now defunct Caribbean Cigar Co, this brand is now manufactured
by the same craftsmen responsible for the Camacho and Bac-carat
brands. The Churchill featured this month is handmade from extensively
aged tobaccos,
which combine a silky Habano seed Jama-stran wrapper and long leaf
Honduran fillers. Look for a mild-to-medium body with a distinct
leathery flavor. This extremely satis-fying smoke ends slightly
spicy. Consider pairing this one with a hoppy India Pale Ale or
your choice of a full-bodied bourbon.
