“Mr. Butts Only”: Regal, Dignified, and of Good Taste… If Only We Knew Who He Was!
My wife snapped this photo while taking a break on our motorcycle road trip. Didn't realize I would be sending this in, but when I got home and recieved my cigar of the month package, my wife suggested I send it in.
Mr. Kim Blackhurst
Who Knows Where?, USA
Well, thank you for the photo “Mr. Kim Blackhurst”. But guess what? You didn’t tell us your name or where the heck you are from! The photo you submitted (an instant classic by the way) came to us from your wife, Kim’s, e-mail address, so we have her name but not yours, thus, you are currently being identified as “Mr. Kim Blackhurst” and, flatteringly, “Mr. Butts Only”, as well as “Mr. Butts”—but notice, out of respect, we always call you “Mr.” (well, out of respect and the fact that you look like you could probably throw a serious beating on us if we upset you too badly!) What’s worse, we can’t send you your free cigars—which you earned yourself by submitting this stellar photo—because we have no idea where you live!
So we’ve decided to have a little contest here at the club…
Guess the “Mr. Butts Only” dude’s name. Members are invited to e-mail us with their own photo submissions, complete with your full NAME and ADDRESS (how else can we send you your variety pack of 25 free cigars?) and while you’re at it, take a guess as to the name of the dude on the “Butts Only” can. If Mr. Butts can get back to us with his actual name before someone else gives us a name we think is the most appropriate considering the photo, then the free cigars go to Mr. Butts. If not, then a clever, name-savvy member will earn them, thus stealing them away from Mr. Butts. If no one decides to play along, we’re smokin’ these bad boys ourselves (and don’t think we won’t do it neither!)
We’re gonna go out on a limb and take a stab at it by guessing: Franklin Aluitius Dunberry Blackhurst. Think you can do better? E-mail us at customerservice@cigarmonthclub.com and we’ll just see about that…
SUBMIT YOURSELF OR YOUR GROUP PHOTO
FOR CONSIDERATION! And if you're selected, we'll send you a variety
pack of 25 hand rolled smokes from past selections!
Get your submissions in now before everyone else does or you gotta wait 3
months to see your pretty mug adorning the front page! Send your photos and
letter
to: Cigar of the Month Club Attn: Member of the Month, PO Box 1627, Lake Forest, CA 92609 or email your photo and letter to customerservice@cigarmonthclub.com.

Black Pearl “Rojo Series” Toro by La Perla Habana
La Perla Habana is one of the most coveted brands produced today. Two of
the industry's most respected entrepreneurs took it upon themselves to recreate
this well-known Cuban brand in the Dominican Republic. Sergio Cuevas and
Doug Wood have created a cigar in which commitment, quality, and flavor are
the sole concerns. Using closely guarded techniques to age and blend the
tobaccos, these men have produced a cigar that is worthy of the name, the
Pearl of Habana. We think they've done an exceptional job with this highly
rated line right down to the level of detail in re-creating the band to exacting
standards. The Black Pearl is the strongest cigar made by La Perla. The wrapper
is a handsome, coffee-black (that's without cream!) Oscuro Habana Criollo.
It encases a complex, full-flavored blend of Nicaraguan and Dominican Corojo
Ligero long leaves. This is a full-bodied smoke with a complex and spicy
flavor profile. Expect hints of nuts and a slightly peppery, cedary note
in the finish. Consider pairing it with a well-aged Cabernet.
Visit the Cibao River Valley in the Dominican Republic and you’ll
discover the finest tobaccos grown in the entire country. Subscribe to our
Cigar of the Month Club, and you get this famed tobacco delivered right to
your door (lucky you)! Located near the northern coast, the lush and fertile
Cibao River Valley is situated both literally, and figuratively, at the heart
of the Dominican cigar industry. And Cibao cigars, crafted under the watchful
eye and meticulous hands of Señor Blanco, are worthy of the name.
These gems are made with expertly blended aged Dominican grown Olor binder
and Cuban seed Piloto filler grown on the factory's own farm. The wrapper
is a true Connecticut Windsor shade born and bred in the USA. Put it all
together and you’ve got an ultra-smooth, creamy, well-balanced and
flavorful cigar. The Churchill we’ve sent you is really gorgeous; look
for a smooth, slightly oily wrapper, well rolled with just the right firmness.
Note an effortless draw and even burn in this mild Churchill with a gentle
yet distinctive tobacco flavor. There's just a hint of Dominican spice evident
as you get about 10 minutes in to the smoke. A great A.M. smoke over coffee
or with a light lager beer in the early afternoon.
K. Hansotia of Gurkha has an inspiring resume which includes such top-rated
blends as Gurkha, K. Hansotia and Sherpa. We find ourselves featuring one
of his blissfully enjoyable cigars just about every month, and one thing
we’ve noticed (perhaps you have as well) is the extra attention to
detail that goes in to his cigar labels. Like the Gurkha Regent Toro we featured
in September, this cigar has a label design that really catches the eye,
giving you something to admire while you smoke it. Not just a title or a
simple (yet appreciated) “Hecho a Mano”, the care that goes in
to these labels is just another manifestation of K. Hansotia’s almost
religious commitment to creating interesting and novel cigars. His latest,
East India, is made by the elite Torano family in their Dominican factory.
This cigar offers a gorgeous, reddish-brown Brazilian wrapper and lip smacking,
medium-bodied, complex but mellow blend of premium Dominican and Honduran
long-leaf tobaccos. We found it to be mild-to-medium-bodied but with a firm
spiciness that is especially present at the start. Its restrained smoke volume
and pleasant aroma make this a cigar you can enjoy without imposing upon
those around you. Smoke it with a dry, crisp, hoppy IPA.
From a relative newcomer and critical darling, Padilla, a small boutique
brand, is enjoying their ongoing rise to fame. Thanks to a dogged dedication
to perfection, brothers Ernesto and Carlos Padilla use what they refer to
as “lost or forgotten” old-Cuban traditions in order to create
an outstanding premium handmade cigar. To them, attention to detail is paramount,
so Ernesto and Carlos personally observe each cigar as it passes through
a 5-step, “seed-to-box” process. They utilize a mature blend
of Nicaraguan, Dominican, and Peruvian long-fillers, and flawless, Grade-A
wrapper leaves grown in Ecuador. This marriage of fine tobaccos creates a
well-balanced, flavorful, soothing smoke. We’re featuring their Nicaraguan
line which is made using only the richest and most sought after leaves grown
in Central America. The wrapper on the Padilla Robusto is one of the most
expensive available in today’s market. Expect a flavorful, medium-bodied
cigar loaded with notes of nut, pepper and flourishes of toasted caramel.
Look for a complex finish that showcases a blend of sweet caramel, pepper
and woody flavors. We recommend enjoying this one with a rich and robust
chocolaty stout.
You’ve no doubt heard of the Romeo y Julieta line of cigars—they’re
one of the most sought after cigars in the country. Hand-rolled in the Dominican
Republic with that country’s best 100% long fillers and binders, the
RyJ Bully we’ve sent you would be considered a puro were it not for
the rare wrapper—Indonesian TBN (TBN is an abbreviation for tabaco
bawah naungan, which translates to “tobacco under sheet,” or
shade-grown tobacco). This particular line is a modern re-creation of the
original Cuban brand. We found that it burned with a characteristic white
ash—stiff and solid—not surprising when you realize how densely
packed with tobacco this cigar is. Its smooth, mellow taste is presented
with a medium body and possesses a strong herbal quality, with prominent
notes of aromatic cedar. Providing a complex blend of flavors, this cigar
is for the experienced smoker with a sophisticated palate. Note the woody
finish and strongly herbal, almost mentholated flavors and a minor note of
lemon essence in the very pleasant aftertaste. Our panel members couldn’t
put this one down, smoking it to the nub and practically burning their fingers
as they smoked it for all it was worth. Don’t laugh at us, but some
panel members suggested substituting their morning coffee with a cup of Earl
Grey tea along with this smoke. Others suggested a smooth, floral sake as
an alcoholic counterpart.
ASK MURL
Hey Murl,
What is meant by the term Puro? I see it quite a bit in the club newsletters (I’ve been a member for 6-months now!!) However, I must confess, I don’t know what the heck it means… Could you please satisfy my craving for stogie-related knowledge, oh wisest of canines?
Amie Richardson
Atlanta, GA
Yo Amie,
I’m happy to assist you in your thirst for cigar info… speaking of thirst, give me a minute… got to lap up this tasty brew I’m reviewing for our Domestic Microbrewed Beer of the month club… Mmmmmm… That’s some good stuff—it’s the Elfego Bock from the Rio Grande Brewing Company out in Albuquerque, New Mexico if you’re interested. It’s one of four domestic micros we’re featuring this month (November). Get on board with our beer club if you’re not already Ames, it’s good stuff. Not to try to turn this in to a commercial, but even the big ‘ol Murl Dog has to answer to the man and the occasional manager now and again… it’s called “the cross-sell”… but the beauty here is that I will stand by any of my recommendations because I firmly believe that every damned product we feature here is worth the investment. Hey, if it’s good enough for me, it’s good enough for thee…
So, puros…. Here we go… A puro is a cigar that’s been made entirely from the tobaccos of a single county. Examples of the most well known Puros are Cuban cigars. In Cuba, the filler, binder, and wrapper are all grown ‘in-country’. Cigar manufacturers who make Puros consider it a great honor to be able to achieve such a level of sufficiency, as it gives them more control over the consistency and quality of the finished product. The difficulty in acquiring the necessary native ingredients in producing a puro makes it very rare indeed. Other than Cuban cigars, which are unavailable in the American market, there are only a handful of Puros out there. The Breton Corojo Vintage, Corojo2000, and the Opus X are all excellent quality Dominican Puros.
So there’s your answer Ames… Congratulations on being a member for 6-months! I hope ya stick around for at least another 6-months! It’s great having the female of the species in the club… ask me anything you like, any time—I’m always “available” for the ladies…
Woof!
