Just because you may not have heard of La Cuna doesn’t mean you’re not in for a real treat. The brand is a series of small-batch cigars that seeks to capitalize on the fact that there are pockets of exceptional tobaccos out there in amounts too small to support full, ongoing production requirements. Typically these pockets of extra-special tobaccos yield a max of 75 to 100 thousand cigars in a year. Unfortunately, for many cigar makers, that’s simply not enough production to keep the lights on. Just as micro-breweries and small wineries often produce the most interesting and varied stuff, small-batch cigar brands like La Cuna often do the same. There’s a downside (with wines, beers and cigars): sometimes small producers lack consistency. Our panelists didn’t find that to be the case with La Cuna, a definite winner for you—assuming you’re patient. A few on our panel said they tasted the wrapper on the tongue with the first few puffs and the result was a charry and salty taste. Thankfully, this quickly settled into a decent flavor and about one inch in, the cigar really picked up steam. La Cuna Bin 85 is crafted in the same Nicaraguan factory where such brands as Rocky Patel Fusion, ITC 10th Anniversary, Padilla Habano, Man O’ War, and many other fantastic blends are made. The choice mixture of vintage Nicaraguan long-fillers and the attractive, reddish Habano wrapper deliver a range of flavors: wood, toast, and leather with nuances of earth followed by a smooth, crisp finish with a touch of pepper. This is a savory, medium-bodied stick with a great price point. Remove the band and you have a complex, satisfying cigar that might trick you into thinking you’re burning a major boutique brand. This stogie has terrific aging potential but even off the truck, La Cuna is a great daily go-to cigar so check out our reorder prices on this one! Pair this one with the Cottrell Mystic Bridge IPA we’re featuring this month in our Microbrewed Beer of the Month Club. Your favorite brewski will work, too.
The Nicaraguan cigar industry originated when Cuban cigar makers escaped the revolution and re-established their livelihood in Nicaragua with Cuban-seed tobacco. Blessed with dark, rich soil, their new home was ideal for tobacco cultivation and Nicaragua quickly became known for cigars that rivaled Cuban quality. Unfortunately, revolution and war came to Nicaragua in the 1980s and devastated the industry, but it’s rebounded dramatically and is once again producing tobacco considered by many to be the finest in the world. The Esteli Valley is in many ways the heart of Nicaraguan production and is known for its very powerful and spicy tobacco. The Jalapa Valley produces arguably the finest tobacco in the country: somewhat sweeter and less intense than Esteli, but extremely complex. The tobacco of the Condega Valley is often described as a blend of the other two regions
